Northridge Gets an Early Commitment

Sha-Ron Elzy, a 6-foot-5 forward from Chaffey College, said Thursday he will sign a letter of intent to play basketball at Cal State Northridge.

Elzy, a graduate of Etiwanda High, said he chose Northridge over Southern Utah because he wants to stay in Southern California. He also said Northridge’s acceptance into the Big Sky Conference for next season was a factor.

“[Northridge] looked like a rising program,” Elzy said.

The NCAA’s weeklong early signing period begins next Wednesday.

Soft Tennis

Four area players earned medals for the United States in its first entry in the World Soft Tennis Championships, which concluded Tuesday in Gifu City, Japan.

Darin Pleasant of Thousand Oaks reached the final of the consolation individual singles tournament, losing to Inamori Hiroshi of Japan, 4-3, in a tiebreaker. Randy Berg of Woodland Hills, who lost to Hiroshi, 4-0, in the semifinals, received the bronze medal.

Bob Collins of Simi Valley and Craig Cignarelli of Calabasas were silver medalists in doubles, losing to Samuel and William Polanco of Dominican Republic, 5-3, in the final.

Tennis

Top-seeded Brenda Schultz-McCarthy of the Netherlands defeated Meilen Tu of Northridge, 6-1, 6-4, in the second round of the $161,250 Bell Challenge at Quebec City, Canada.

Bowling

Although Tish Johnson of Northridge lost to Aleta Still in the title match of the $75,000 Lady Ebonite Classic on Thursday night in Canton, Mich., the $6,700 runner-up prize put her season earnings over the $100,000 mark for the first time in her 15-year career.

Still of Dearborn, Mich., rolled a 233 to Johnson’s 225.
