SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Reseda High’s football team used a tough defense to beat Eagle Rock, 10-7, in the City Section Division 3-A final Friday at Birmingham High.

It was Reseda’s first City title since winning a 2-A championship in 1986.

The Regents (11-3) survived an outbreak of flu that affected 10 players during the week, although they didn’t show many signs of life in the first half, gaining only 86 yards.

Eagle Rock (11-3) didn’t do much better, gaining only 90 yards in a scoreless first half.

But Reseda held Eagle Rock to one yard in the third quarter and turned a fumbled punt into the game’s first score--a 35-yard field goal by Tom Gutierrez.

Eagle Rock also hurt itself early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Red Navarrette fumbled and lost the snap from center at midfield.

Seven plays later, Bobby Carrara made his ninth touchdown reception of the season, an 11-yard pass play from Jamaal Washington with 5:23 left.

Eagle Rock scored on a 48-yard pass play from Navarrett to John Fontamillas with 4:17 left, but Reseda ran out the clock.
