Balanced Attack Propels Cal Lutheran Past Whittier

Mark Heerema scored 18 points and four other Cal Lutheran players scored in double figures as the Kingsmen rolled to a 92-58 victory over Whittier on Wednesday night in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Cal Lutheran.

Heerema, a senior guard from L.A. Baptist High, hit six of nine shots as Cal Lutheran (10-4, 2-1) shot 50.9% (29 of 57) from the field.

Dave Ulloa and Jon Rider each added 13 points for the Kingsmen, who forced 25 turnovers by Whittier (7-7, 2-1). Alex Koers led the Poets with 14 points.

Ventura 91, Cuesta 70--Jamal Cobbs had 18 points and 12 assists for the visiting Pirates (19-2, 1-0) in their Western State Conference North Division opener. Charles Woodard added 15 points, and Gerald Zimmerman had 14.

Jarrett Wendt scored 21 points for Cuesta (12-12).

Moorpark 84, Oxnard 76--Brady Mertes had 25 points and Tim Nunnery added 22 for Moorpark (10-12) in their WSC North Division opener at Oxnard.

William Fletcher had 28 points for Oxnard (2-15).

Valley 75, West L.A. 51--Vernon Simmons scored 15 points, and Mike Farmer had 13 for Valley (16-7) in its WSC South Division opener.

Bakersfield 67, Canyons 50--Bill Bedgood had 20 points for the Cougars (6-16) in a WSC South Division opener at home.

Lovell Brown scored 25 points for Bakersfield (15-7).

WOMEN

L.A. Valley 84, Pierce 25--Anna Marquez scored 14 points and Shawanda Hotchkiss scored 13 for the Monarchs (16-9), for whom 11 players scored in their Western State Conference South Division opener at home.

Canyons 70, Bakersfield 61--Melissa Dunkerley, Maxine Unverferth and Bev Hunt each scored 12 points for the Cougars (13-9) in a WSC South Division opener.

Oxnard 55, Moorpark 54--Allison Jones scored 16 points and Mickie Luifau added 15 for the visiting Condors (13-6) in their WSC North Division opener.

Trisha Palmquist scored 18 points for Moorpark (8-10).
