San Clemente Wins League Meet

San Clemente foiled Capistrano Valley’s attempt at its fourth consecutive South Coast League wrestling championship Wednesday night, winning the title with 191 1/2 points.

Capistrano Valley was second with 156 1/2. San Clemente, which had six wrestlers in the finals, won four weight classes. The top three in each weight class advance to the Southern Section Division I finals Feb. 17.

San Clemente junior Paul Virgin, who was fourth last season at the league finals, won the 103-pound title by pinning J.B. Smeker of Dana Hills in 1 minute 53 seconds.

Chris Sayer won at 130 pounds.

Adam Miller won by a pin (six seconds, a league record) at 152 pounds, and Mateo Headrick, ranked No. 1 in the county, won at 215 pounds.

Although Capistrano Valley was second, it got five to the finals and came away with four winning titles.

Matt Krepper (103 pounds), Scott Elliott (119), Bryan Canfield (145) and Andrew Tuzzolino (189) were champions for Capistrano Valley.

Trabuco Hills, which was third with 124 points, had seven wrestlers in the finals. Kyle Young (125) and Bao Quach (140) were titlists.

Mission Viejo, which finished with 117 1/2 points had two titlists, Sam Han (135) and Jeff Tibbitts (171). Mater Dei’s Zach Taylor (160) pinned Geoff Taylor of Trabuco Hills in 4:16 and Matt Karich made a last-second escape to win his 275-pound match, 5-4, against Mike Garrett of Mission Viejo.

In the Pacific Coast League championships:

Laguna Hills 202, University 115, Aliso Niguel 108 1/2, Estancia 95, Costa Mesa 73--Laguna Hills qualified 11 wrestlers for Southern Section Division III, including nine league champions.

Garrett Dulaney (171) defeated Bryan Min of University, 6-4, in overtime and Thanh Nguyen (112) won his third league championship for the Hawks.
