Wrestling Mania for Ventura

Ventura, second in the Channel League, competes as an at-large entry against Capistrano Valley in the Southern Section’s Division I dual meet wrestling tournament Saturday at Santa Ana Calvary Chapel High.

Newbury Park and Camarillo, co-champions of the Marmonte League, will compete in Division II at Temecula Valley. Newbury Park opens against Northview, Camarillo against Schurr.

Frontier League champion Calabasas will face Palmdale in the Division IV tournament at Santiago High, where Golden League champion Highland opens against Gladstone and La Canada faces Bishop Amat.

All meets begin at 10 a.m.

Basketball

Verdugo Hills senior forward Maurice Potter, the leading City Section scorer in the area, will miss the Dons’ final regular-season game against Marshall for his role in a fight at a game last week, Potter said.

Potter, who didn’t play in Verdugo Hills’ last two games, said he missed a game last Friday against Wilson because he was sick, but was involved in an altercation following the game.

Potter is averaging 33.6 points and 11.9 rebounds.

Highland High has petitioned the Southern Section, seeking a forfeit victory from its 65-28 loss to Antelope Valley in a girls’ match last week.

Highland athletic director Paul Arnold sent a letter to section officials, charging Antelope Valley with two violations--using an illegal player, guard Tashie Aguinaga, in the Feb. 1 game, and running an illegal grade check on Aguinaga that day.

Arnold claimed Aguinaga, who scored nine points in the game, was academically ineligible until this week.

Chatsworth senior Eddie Miller will miss the rest of the season after being declared ineligible by the school, Coach Fluke Fluker said.

Fluker said that Miller is not academically ineligible but is being held out for other school-related reasons.

Miller, an All-City center last season, was averaging 25.3 points.

Eboni Conley, a four-year starter on the Buena High girls’ basketball team, will miss the rest of the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.

Conley, a senior guard, was Cal-Hi Sports state freshman of the year in 1993 and was the Channel League player of the year last season.

Softball

After 15 seasons as coach at Buena High, Sharon Coggins resigned her position and has left the school to start a softball program at Santa Barbara City College.

Pete Shedlosky, who has never coached a varsity team, has replaced Coggins.

Football

Newbury Park High’s Eddie Patterson, a defensive back and receiver, will attend Stanford on an academic scholarship and walk on as a football player.

Another Panther receiver, 6-foot-5 DaJuan Hawkins, has been offered scholarships by Arizona and California contingent on him earning a qualifying score on the Scholastic Assessment Test.

Notre Dame quarterback Ryan Bowne, who led the Knights to a Southern Section Division III championship as a junior, said he will decide between Ivy League schools Yale and Penn next week.

A.J. Coney of Sylmar made a commitment to Jackson State.

Coney, who played quarterback and safety for the Spartans, chose Jackson State over Grambling.

Volleyball

Kathleen O’Laughlin, who led Cal State Northridge to the 1994 National Invitational championship title, has been hired as a full-time assistant coach for the Matadors.

Baseball

Buena High senior Erin Schatz tied for fourth place in the 200-meter backstroke at the U.S. national swimming championships in Orlando, Fla.

Schatz finished in 2:18.47 along with Alecia Humphrey in a tuneup for the Olympic trials next month.
