Van Nuys’ 113-69 Win Sends Bravo Medical to Sick Bay

Jon Okui scored 18 points and Onaje Longmire added 17 as top-seeded Van Nuys High overwhelmed Bravo Medical, 113-69, in a City Section 3-A Division boys’ basketball game Friday night at Van Nuys.

The Wolves scored no fewer than 26 points in any quarter at Van Nuys. Jorge Gurrola added seven points and 17 rebounds for Van Nuys (14-9).

In other boys’ 3-A Division first-round games:

Granada Hills 71, Lincoln 63--The Highlanders (11-12), after being tied, 16-16, through the first quarter, took an 11-point lead at halftime and held on.

Center Ernest Quinley had 23 points and 17 rebounds. Guard Paul Chan added 13 points and six assists.

Canoga Park 84, Bell 73--Carloes Harper had 33 points and 16 rebounds, and Anthony Ellison added 17 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for the Hunters (20-4) at Canoga Park.

Huntington Park 55, Birmingham 46--The Braves led, 9-4, and trailed by two at halftime, but Huntington Park continued to pull away. Birmingham (11-12), a young team coming off its best game of the season--a 59-42 victory over Granada Hills--played this game without emotion, Coach Al Bennett said.

Emmanuel Evans scored 19 points for the Braves.

Casiano Galvez had 19 for Huntington Park (9-8).

4-A DIVISION

Crenshaw 125, North Hollywood 58--Five Crenshaw players scored in double figures, led by Alastair Saux with 21 points, for the Cougars at home.

Shannon Johnson scored 20 points for North Hollywood (8-17), which trailed, 58-18, at halftime.

El Camino Real 53, South Gate 48--Cameron Henderson scored 18 points and the host Conquistadores (17-9) took advantage of seven Ram turnovers in the final quarter.

GIRLS

4-A DIVISION

Crenshaw 58, Kennedy 45--Tamaya Morris scored 24 points, dished out six assists and had six steals, but it was not enough for the Golden Cougars (12-12), who lost to the top-seeded Cougars, the three-time defending City Section champions.

North Hollywood 61, Roosevelt 45--Samantha Fargeon had 25 points and 14 rebounds, and Stephanie Wasserman added 18 points as the Huskies (19-3) won their 15th consecutive game.

Dawn Pellerin scored 20 points for the Roughriders (14-10).

Taft 63, Venice 43--Monia Calhoun and Vanessa Dunn combined to score 15 of the Toreadors’ 19 points in the third quarter as they built on a 29-25 halftime lead at Taft.

Calhoun finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Dunn had 16 points and Nyoki McKeith had 15 for the Toreadors (20-0).

3-A DIVISION

Chatsworth 59, Eagle Rock 30--Tynitra Wilson scored 13 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to lead the Chancellors (18-6) at home. Nancy Vincent had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. Jodi Borenstein scored 17 points and had five assists.
