“We played [Quartz Hill] in the second game of the season and lost, 3-1,” said Canyon Coach Michele Braceros, whose team was 2-9-1 earlier this season. “But we’re so much better now and the girls didn’t back down even though it was a very physical game.”

Canyon advanced to the divisional semifinals last season after finishing third in league play and earning a wild-card berth.

Braceros is hoping for a similar run in the next two weeks.

“A lot of people will overlook us because we didn’t have a strong preseason,” she said. “Out of the 32 teams in the first round, we’re the only team that didn’t have at least 12 wins.”
