Century to Sponsor Tennis Tournament

Share

Century High will host its own version of the Davis Cup when some of the top boys’ high school tennis teams in the nation will gather March 14-16 for the first Vic Braden Cup.

Braden, who has a tennis college in Coto de Caza, is lending his name to the tournament and will speak at the opening ceremonies.

The county teams entered in the 16-team field are Woodbridge, Corona del Mar, University, Garden Grove, El Dorado, Edison and Century. Out-of-county teams are defending Southern Section Division II champion Palm Desert, North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, Phoenix Brophy Prep, Arizona large-school champion Mesa Dobson, Beverly Hills, San Diego Section champion Del Mar Torrey Pines, Camarillo, Diamond Bar and Cupertino Monte Vista.

The teams will play four matches each and will use the “triple-one” scoring system that is being tested by several leagues in the Southern Section this year. This format is similar to a college scoring system in which all players must play singles and doubles sets. Matches will be played at Century, Corona del Mar and Woodbridge high schools.
