Moorpark Ousts Newport Harbor in Overtime

Top-seeded Moorpark needed overtime to hold off unseeded Newport Harbor, 81-76, in a Southern Section Division III-AA girls’ basketball quarterfinal Wednesday at Newport Harbor High.

Newport Harbor’s M.E. Clayton scored inside with five seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score, 72-72.

Laura Everett scored six of her 10 points in overtime for Moorpark, but Newport Harbor had a chance to tie with 12 seconds remaining.

Trailing 79-76, Newport Harbor (16-12) took a three-point shot but missed and Moorpark scored on a layup as time expired.

Damaris Hinojosa, a 5-10 freshman, had 25 points and Tracey Milburn had 24 points for Moorpark.

Breanna Badorek had 23 points and 10 rebounds and Clayton had 23 points and 12 rebounds for Newport Harbor.

Moorpark advances to play Torrance Bishop Montgomery in one semifinal Saturday. Bishop Montgomery beat San Luis Obispo, 89-74.

In another Division III-AA quarterfinal:

Pasadena Muir 88, Pacifica 56--Tiana Sanders scored 18 points for second-seeded Muir (23-4), which led after one quarter, 31-14. Heather Green scored 22 points for host Pacifica (19-6), which won the Garden Grove League.

In Division I-AA:

Lynwood 60, Esperanza 49--Esperanza (18-8) led by 10 after the first quarter, but foul trouble allowed fourth-seeded Lynwood (26-2) to rally for a 26-23 halftime lead. Lindsay Foss scored 19 points and surpassed Sharon Warmus as the all-time Esperanza scoring leader with 1,197 points.

Fountain Valley 72, Rialto Eisenhower 49--Nicole Strange scored 25 points and Jennifer Ludwicki had 23 as third-seeded Fountain Valley advanced to play Palmdale in the quarterfinals Saturday.

In Division III-A:

San Dimas 70, Estancia 54--Jill Black scored 16 points for visiting Estancia (21-6), which led at halftime, 27-25. But after three Estancia starters went to the bench with foul trouble in the third quarter, San Dimas rallied and outscored Estancia in the second half, 45-27.

Burgundy Porter scored 27 points for San Dimas (17-9).

In Division IV-A quarterfinals:

Sun Valley Village Christian 80, Orange Lutheran 43--Orange Lutheran was stopped by Village Christian’s Lindy James, who made eight three-pointers and scored 37 points. Liz Pappas led the Lancers (15-9) with 12 points.

Burbank Bell-Jefferson 60, Brethren Christian 36--Visiting Bell-Jefferson went on a 17-0 run in the second quarter and led at the half, 28-14. Jaclyn Johnson scored eight points in the run for Bell-Jefferson (22-5).

Rachael MacDonald had 11 points for Brethren Christian (17-9).

In Division V-AA:

Covina Western Christian 73, St. Margaret’s 59--Charlene Simiric scored 12 of her 30 points in the fourth quarter for visiting Western Christian (15-8), which pulled away after leading, 48-45, heading into the fourth quarter.

Jean Freeman had 23 points and 18 rebounds and Shay Trette scored 20 points for St. Margaret’s (17-5)

In the Division V-A quarterfinals:

Liberty Christian 41, Maricopa 32--Lisa Winters had 16 points and eight rebounds for host Liberty Christian (18-9), which reached the semifinals for the second time in school history.

Heather Hill had nine points and nine rebounds and Lynlee Vaccaro had 12 points for Liberty Christian. Maricopa ends at 21-4.
