Dorsey won its first girls’ basketball title last Friday when the Dons defeated Chatsworth, 47-45. The school’s only other championship-game appearance was in 1984 when it lost to Locke in the 4-A final. Dorsey Coach Ken Turner said he hopes his team will move up to the higher 4-A division next season, making it eligible for the state tournament. . . . The Clippers co-sponsored the City Section 4-A girls’ and boys’ basketball finals last Saturday afternoon at the Sports Arena, but only 4,687 showed up for the doubleheader. Several coaches said moving the games from their traditional Friday night time slot hurt. . . . State long-jump champion Clarence Scott is one of several local athletes who will participate in the National Scholastic Indoor meet this Saturday and Sunday in Boston. Scott, who transferred from Fremont to Dorsey over the summer, has the best high school jump of the indoor season at 24 feet 8 1/2 inches. . . . The City Section boys’ soccer final between Garfield and Belmont ended in a scoreless tie Saturday at East L.A. College. The teams played 30 minutes of overtime but didn’t use penalty kicks to break the tie as was done in previous playoff games. “It’s better this way because ending the season on penalty kicks is too much pressure for the guy who misses,” Garfield Coach Gerardo Campos said.
