Football Coach Rau Quits at Buena Park

Bob Rau, Buena Park football coach, has resigned, Athletic Director Dan Hirsch said Friday.

Rau was 7-24 in three seasons as the Coyotes’ coach. Buena Park finished 0-10 last season.

Hirsch said Rau wanted to dedicate more time to teaching.

Fred Valko has resigned as the La Quinta football coach, Athletic Director Jim Perry recently announced.

Valko resigned to concentrate on his work as a union representative for General Motors. He was the only walk-on varsity football coach in Orange County.

The Aztecs had a 4-26 record the past three seasons under Valko.

Edison midfielder Todd Marcus, a two-time Times’ all-county selection in boys’ soccer, said he will attend Westmont College this fall. Marcus’ four brothers--Trent, Tom, Taylor and Travis--also attended Westmont. Marcus also considered Houghton College in New York.

Eryn Gerhard, a midfielder from Dana Hills High, has signed a letter of intent to play women’s soccer at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Dolphin Coach Matt Williams said.

Omar Amr, a junior water polo player at UC Irvine, was one of 11 athletes selected to the men’s GTE Academic All-District VIII at-large team, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Amr maintained a 3.50 grade-point average in biological sciences.

Lance Stewart and Prentice Perkins have been hired as assistant women’s volleyball coaches at UC Irvine, the school announced.

Stewart, who is also the men’s coach at Irvine Valley College, was the UCI men’s assistant coach in 1990. Perkins, who played at Corona del Mar High, was at Long Beach State from 1991 to 1994 and was part of the 49ers’ national championship team in 1993.
