Sunny Hills Scores Late to Upset Third-Ranked Sonora

Sunny Hills scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to upset third-ranked Sonora, 12-11, in Freeway League baseball.

Brad Carmody’s hit drove in Adam Rodriguez for Sunny Hills (6-7, 4-3). The Lancers scored nine runs in the bottom of the third to take a 9-6 lead, but Sonora (10-2-1, 5-2) rallied to tie the score, 11-11, with four runs in the top of the seventh.

Rodriguez finished the game with two hits and two runs batted in for Sunny Hills. Sonora’s Bubba Bonurant was four for five.

In other Freeway League games:

Buena Park 4, La Habra 0--Sophomore Daniel Flores pitched a four-hitter, his second shutout this season, and Brian Cook had two hits for visiting Buena Park (8-7-1, 3-3-1).

Fullerton 5, Troy 0--Mario Ramirez hit a two-run double in the first and an RBI single in the seventh for Fullerton. Ramirez also scored twice and stole two bases. Michael Garner (4-1) gave up only four hits. Garner, second in the county in earned-run average, has not given up an earned run in league play this season for Fullerton (9-3-1, 6-0-1).

In Golden West League softball:

Ocean View 1, Tustin 0--Sara Gulla (4-4) pitched a no-hitter for Ocean View (8-8, 1-0). Cara Vanderhook drove in the only run, scoring Lea Gulla in the first inning.

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 4, Edison 0--Lisa Layton was three for three with two RBIs for Fountain Valley (10-6, 1-0). Jackie Killian and Carolyn Caforia each had two hits.

In Sunset League boys’ volleyball:

Esperanza 3, Fountain Valley 1--Jason Dillard had 12 kills and Jon Alleman had 12 for second-ranked Esperanza, which defeated sixth-ranked Fountain Valley, 15-5, 15-5, 9-15, 15-3. Justin Dalton had 59 assists for Esperanza, which remains undefeated in league (9-1, 4-0).
