While the high school tennis powers in Los Angeles have usually been centered in the Westside area, Pasadena schools are enjoying a resurgence in the sport. San Marino (9-3) is ranked third in the Southern Section’s Division II poll, and Pasadena Poly is No. 9 in Division III. San Marino is led by nationally ranked Andrew Park and Paul Fruttero. Pasadena Poly (6-4) is led by Charles Lin, who is 28-2 in matches this season. Poly’s No. 2 player, Jon Wirjo, is 24-6. Although one of the smaller schools in Division III, Poly has won Southern Section championships in three different divisions. “[Tennis] was down for a while here,” Coach Howard Farer said, “but because of the excellent tennis clubs in the area, tennis in Pasadena is flourishing.” . . . Beverly Hills’ Jose Lieberman finished second in the Easter Bowl tournament in Palm Springs last weekend in the 16-year-old division. The tournament invites the top junior players in the country. Lieberman is ranked third nationally and has led the Normans this year to a 13-4 record. . . . Palisades, the City Section’s defending champion, is stronger than last year, according to Coach Bud Kling. Palisades has made it to the City finals 14 out of the last 16 years, winning 11 titles. “Actually, this is the best team I’ve had in the last five years,” he said. . . . Carson’s No. 1 doubles team of Walter Gamulo and Dang Nguyen are undefeated in City Section matches and have been invited to play in the Ojai tournament. The City Section will send seven singles and doubles teams to the tournament, which runs April 25-27.
