Newbury Park Goes Under Twice in Pool Play at Thousand Oaks

Becky Witt had two hits, including a three-run home run, and drove in four runs as Louisville upset Newbury Park, 7-1, Saturday in pool play at the Thousand Oaks softball tournament.

Newbury Park (15-3-1), The Times’ top-ranked team in the Valley area, lost, 2-0, to St. Joseph in an earlier game.

“It was bad, but I didn’t think we would go undefeated this year,” said Newbury Park Coach Mike Morgan, whose team managed just five hits in the two games. “I’d rather lose them now than next week in league.”

Jennifer Glennie added three hits and two RBIs, and Stefanie Urman (7-5) pitched a three-hitter for Louisville (7-5), which lost, 5-0, to St. Joseph.

Thousand Oaks 8, Culver City 1--Jennifer Sharron (11-4) had 13 strikeouts in six innings for the Lancers (12-4) at the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Erica Hansen and Jena Allen each had three hits, and Kristin Comb had two hits and two RBIs for the Lancers.

The game was called after six innings because of an injury to Centaur second baseman Jennifer Atkins, who suffered a head injury when hit by the knee of a Thousand Oaks player while taking a throw on the base.

She lay on the field for 20 minutes before paramedics arrived and took her to Los Robles Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Thousand Oaks scored a 13-7 victory over Glendale (5-10) earlier. Sharron pitched three innings, striking out seven and leaving with a 6-0 lead. Hansen had two hits and scored three runs.

Camarillo 1, Crossroads 0--Kortney Edge scored on an error in the second inning of a game at the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Melanie Richardson pitched a one-hitter for Camarillo (11-1-1) and had 14 strikeouts against the Roadrunners (12-5).

Jefflyn Spahr added two hits for the Scorpions.

Cabrillo 3, Buena 1--Erin Kelly (5-4) threw a six-hitter, allowing two earned runs, striking out two and walking two for the Bulldogs (10-7) at the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Righetti 3, Moorpark 1--Tracey Milburn had two hits and scored on a throwing error for the Musketeers (8-7) at the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Erin Heinbechner (8-4) allowed seven hits while striking out seven and walking one.

Earlier, Moorpark lost, 3-2, to Hoover as Heinbechner struck out eight and walked none.

Buena 2, Westlake 0--The Bulldogs (10-6) scored a pair of unearned runs after the Warriors committed two throwing errors in the seventh inning at the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Buena’s Amber Carr (3-1) pitched a three-hitter, striking out three and walking none, and Silvia Naungayan had two hits.

Hoover 1, Righetti 0--Courtney Hollingsworth’s second-inning single drove in Tina Kinney to give Hoover (13-5) its second victory at the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Hoover defeated Moorpark, 3-2, in an earlier game.

Kinney (11-4) went the distance in both games, striking out five against Righetti and nine against Moorpark.

Diana Curran’s bases-loaded single in the seventh inning drove in Diane Lee for the winning run in the second game.

Oak Park 3, Pasadena Poly 2--Julie Jensen hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Eagles came from behind to win a second-round game in the Paraclete tournament.

After seven scoreless innings, Pasadena Poly scored twice in the top of the eighth before Oak Park (9-8) scored three times in the bottom of the inning.

Tabitha Tata (3-4) struck out seven and walked one.

Oak Park lost, 2-1, in a first-round game earlier. Alicia Barron singled to drive in Morgan Murphy, who had two hits, with the Eagles’ run in the seventh inning.

Kaylene Boldroff (6-4) took the loss despite striking 10.

La Reina 3, Serrano 0--Stephanie Deddens struck out seven and did not walk a batter in the Regents’ first-round victory in the Paraclete tournament.

Meghann Reiss had a two-out, run-scoring double that drove in Stephanie Hyatt in the sixth. Stephanie Hall drove in a run and Jennifer Baltruzak had a base hit.

La Reina (10-7) lost to Dos Pueblos, 2-0, in a second-round game. Deddens (3-3) also started that game before giving way to Danielle Field.

Field, a freshman promoted to the varsity for the tournament, allowed one hit, struck out five and walked two in five innings.

BASEBALL

Carson 6, North Hollywood 3--Daniel Eisenberg had three hits and drove in a run for the Huskies (9-14), who finished 1-3 in the Redondo tournament.

Campbell Hall 16, L.A. Lutheran 5--Erik Rasmussen had four hits, including a triple and a pair of doubles, and drove in four runs for the Vikings (8-8) in a nonleague game at Campbell Hall.

Brian Kriegler had three RBIs and Mark Hagander (1-0) won the first start of his high school career, allowing three hits and one earned run over four innings.

Brentwood 16, Harvard-Westlake 4--Scott Hamilton hit for the cycle for the Eagles at Brentwood.

Hamilton had two singles, a double, triple and home run.

Matt Berkson had two hits and two RBIs for the Wolverines (1-17).
