Saddleback’s Carter Commits to Play Basketball for Hawaii

Anthony Carter, the state’s leading community college basketball scorer last season for Saddleback College, has committed to play next season at Hawaii.

Carter, a 6-1 guard who was a two-time most valuable player in the Orange Empire Conference, is the fifth Saddleback player to sign with the Rainbows in the last four years. He will join Eric Ambrozich and Micah Kroeger on Hawaii’s roster next season.

Carter averaged 27.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and three steals. He had a season-high 44 points. Carter averaged 19.4 points as a freshman.

Saddleback shared the Orange Empire championship each of the last two seasons.

Saul Archuleta, Brian Dewispelaere and Chris Kelly of Fullerton College will continue their baseball careers at Southern Colorado, Hornet Coach Nick Fuscardo announced Thursday.

Second baseman Archuleta is hitting .286 with 25 runs scored in 32 games. Dewispelaere plays center field and is Fullerton’s leadoff hitter. He’s batting .345 and has a conference-leading 24 stolen bases and five triples. Kelly, who has a 3-0 record with a 1.71 earned-run average, is one of the team’s top relievers.

The community college men’s state volleyball tournament begins today at Sacramento American River College.

Golden West plays Long Beach in one semifinal at 4:30 p.m., and Orange Coast meets American River at 7:30.

The championship match is Saturday at 7:30 p.m., preceded by the third-place game at 4:30 p.m.

Tony Litwak, a former All-American water polo player at Orange Coast, has been named to coach the school’s first women’s water polo team this fall, Athletic Director Barry Wallace announced.

Litwak, who graduated from Costa Mesa High and UC Santa Barbara, is playing his first season of professional water polo in Australia. His appointment at OCC will last one season, after which women’s swim Coach Don Watson, who will be on a sabbatical this fall, will take over the program.
