Loyola Boys, Laguna Hills Girls Win in Division II

Loyola High won the last event of the day--the 400-yard freestyle relay--to edge Laguna Hills, 207-194, and win the boys’ division of the Southern Section Division II swim meet at Long Beach’s Belmont Plaza pool Saturday.

Laguna Hills won the girls’ Division II by outdistancing Arcadia, 196.5-169.0.

Among the top Division II performers were Goh Phuangthong of the Laguna Hills boys’ team, who set a divisional record in the 100-yard breaststroke (51.25) and won the 200-yard individual medley (1:52.04), and Brian Malich of El Dorado, who set a record in the 100-yard freestyle (45.15 seconds) and won the 50 freestyle (20.78).

Also, Tim Martin of Anaheim Kennedy had the fastest high school time of the year in the 500 freestyle (4:26.08). Santa Monica’s 200 medley relay team set a record with a time of 1:35.96. That broke a six-year old mark of 1:36.55 by San Marino.

In the Division III meet earlier in the day, Jurupa Valley did not have any individual winners but won the 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays to become the girls’ champion (190 points).

David Chan set a Division III record with a time of 49.33 in the 100 backstroke and won the 100 butterfly to lead Burroughs (176) to the boys’ championship. Burroughs also won the 200 medley relay and Chan was named swimmer of the meet.

Dwight Hernandez of Palm Springs edged Brad Morris of Cathedral City to win both the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
