Glendale’s Psaltis Goes Out on Top

Spiro Psaltis, who this season guided Glendale High to its first Pacific League baseball title since 1988, has resigned.

Psaltis, 36, who as a player was a left-handed pitcher both for Glendale and USC, began coaching at his alma mater as a walk-on assistant in 1987. He cited personal reasons for his decision. Psaltis, employed as a job coordinator for a commercial construction firm, said it was becoming too difficult to balance two careers.

Softball

El Camino Real senior Tami Jones named the West Valley League’s most valuable player.

Jones, a pitcher and shortstop, led the Conquistadores to the league title and their eighth City Section 4-A Division title in the past 12 years.

Track and Field

Jesse Barragan of Long Beach Wilson High, the runner-up in the Division I 1,600 meters of the Southern Section divisional championships on Saturday, has signed a national letter of intent with Cal State Northridge.

Barragan has personal bests of 4 minutes 22.09 seconds in the 1,600 and 9:22.8 in the 3,200.

He also placed 10th in the 1995 Southern Section Division I cross-country championships.
