Marina’s Water Polo Coach Quits, Takes Golden West Job

John Wright has resigned as coach of the Marina High boys’ and girls’ water polo teams and the boys’ swimming team to become an assistant in the men’s water polo program at Golden West College, Marina Athletic Director Larry Doyle announced Tuesday.

Wright had been the water polo coach the last three years, leading the boys’ team to the Sunset League title and the Southern Section Division II finals in 1995. The girls’ team was top-ranked in the section.

During his 10 years as boys’ swimming coach, Marina won seven league titles, including the past five in a row. The Vikings were the Division I champions in 1993.

Wright will continue his work with the Golden West Swim Club.

Marc Smith, El Dorado boys’ volleyball coach the last three seasons, has resigned to concentrate on his duties as the boys’ soccer coach, boys’ Athletic Director Carl Sweet said.

Woodbridge High’s Heaven Yoshino, the county champion in the 300 intermediate hurdles, has signed a letter of intent to attend Nevada this fall and will major in business, girls’ track Coach George Varvas said.

Yoshino had the second-fastest time in the 300 hurdles in the county this season at 44.92 seconds. She also ran on Woodbridge’s 400 and 1,600 relay teams.

Cypress College catcher Stephanie Bloomingdale has committed to play softball at Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La., according to her father, William.

Bloomingdale caught every inning of every game this season for Cypress, which finished 47-16 and advanced to the state community college tournament.
