1995 in Review

After finishing in a three-way tie for first in 1994, Kennedy won the league going away in 1995. Kennedy Coach Mitch Olson won his third league title in his 10 years at the school, but his first two titles were in the Garden Grove League. The Fighting Irish were led by all-county defensive back Garrett Sabol, who tied for the county lead in interceptions with eight. Sabol, named the league’s MVP, also caught 59 passes for 887 yards. Senior running back Darin Martineau led Kennedy’s ground game with 1,103 yards and 16 touchdowns. Quarterback Tom Haas, who was named the league’s offensive MVP, passed for 1,619 yards and 13 touchdowns. Kennedy defeated Westminster, 21-6, in the first round but lost to Corona del Mar in the Division V quarterfinals, 28-0. El Dorado was the best of the rest and finished 4-1 in league. The Golden Hawks, led by running back David Myers’ 592 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns, lost to Villa Park, 23-20, in the first round. Loara tied with Cypress for third in league but was awarded a playoff berth when Cypress had to forfeit two victories for using an ineligible player. Loara, led by junior quarterback Archie Lappin, lost to eventual section finalist Servite, 49-20, in the first round of the playoffs.
