CHECKING IN: Junior tackles Michael Beams (6 feet 2, 250 pounds) and Germain Huddleston (6-3, 225) should complement the experienced guards and center.

COMING BACK: Senior quarterback Gary Nieto (6 feet, 175) passed for 592 yards last season. Senior linebacker Kurt Hohan (6-0, 195), who rushed for 26 yards, will play an increased role on offense. Senior linemen D.J. Bennett (6-3, 320) and Raul Ramirez (6-1, 290) are among four returning starters on what should be an improved offensive front.

CHECKING IN: Junior tailback Miguel Fletcher (5-10, 175) is green but talented. Other promising newcomers include junior Chris Matye, a receiver and defensive back, and junior defensive back Colin Hayashi.

OUTLOOK: Alemany escaped the league cellar last year and should continue to improve. Fletcher might emerge as one of the region’s best backs.

Antelope Valley

COACH: Brent Newcomb, 18th year

LAST SEASON: 12-2, 5-0, Golden League champion.

COMING BACK: Senior Tony Walker, who scored four touchdowns rushing, three receiving, two on returns and one on an interception last year, is the league’s premier player. But there are only three other returning starters--all-league linebacker Aaron Yost, Gary Hardy, a fullback and linebacker, and kicker David Aranzubia.

CHECKING IN: Senior linebackers Gary Hardy and Ken Thomas played regularly last year and should be leaders. Brothers Eric and Justin Mobley played on an eight-man team at Antelope Valley Christian the past two seasons. Eric, a junior, is a potential 1,000-yard rusher. Justin, a senior, figures to start at quarterback. Junior Joe Manning could stand out at receiver and defensive back.

OUTLOOK: Most coaches think the Antelopes can win their third consecutive league title.

LAST SEASON: 13-0, 3-0, Agape League champion.

COMING BACK: Seniors Shannon Byrne and Carl Ligons (5-6, 145), the coach’s son, are the only returning starters from a team that won the Southern Section small-schoolsdivision title last year. Byrne will start at tailback and linebacker. Ligons will play receiver and defensive back.

CHECKING IN: Quarterback Justin Mobley has transferred to Antelope Valley, but Ligons doesn’t expect the Eagles to miss a beat with sophomore Jeff Bell (6-1, 175) directing the offense.

OUTLOOK: The Eagles won’t be as physically talented as last season, but improved fundamentals should make them a quality team once again.

*

Bell-Jeff

COACH: Ken Berry, 1st year

LAST SEASON: 1-9, 1-6, seventh in Santa Fe League.

COMING BACK: Only eight players with varsity experience return for the Guards, who scored only 26 points last season. Senior running back David Montes will shoulder the bulk of the offensive load. He led the Guards in carries last season with 69. Senior lineman Chris Tincher (5-10, 300) anchors the line on both sides of the ball. The defensive leader is senior linebacker David Miles.

CHECKING IN: Sean Doyle has a strong kicking leg. Junior Alex Roldan takes over at quarterback.

OUTLOOK: The Guards have a roster of only 19 players. With Pius X (the only team they beat last year) no longer on the schedule, they will be hard-pressed to win a game.

CHECKING IN: A host of former frosh-soph players, including receiver Demetrus Patterson and defensive back Alberto Flores should add depth and speed. Patterson was fourth in the City in the 100-yard dash. Receivers Rashaad Riley and Jerome Riley come over from the basketball team.

OUTLOOK: The Braves have a chance to finish in the upper half of the conference and match their 1994 playoff run to the 3-A final.

*

Other promising juniors include defensive back Albert de la Rocha, offensive lineman Devyn Deck (6-3, 265) and David McAlpine (6-1, 180), a defensive back and receiver.

OUTLOOK: The offensive line is Buena’s best in several years, Scott said. But inexperience abounds at several key positions.

*

CHECKING IN: Camarillo lost two 300-pound tackles to graduation, but Jeff Festerling (6-1, 250) and Chris Mykleby (6-5, 310) will fill the void. Defensive lineman Mike Davis, a 6-1, 210-pound junior, is a sure tackler.

OUTLOOK: Camarillo must develop a running game to complement Borchard’s passes or the Scorpions will finish in the middle of the pack.

CHECKING IN: Tailback Justin Castillo and receiver Ronnie Polk (6-3, 160, junior) are also projected starters in the secondary.

The trio accounted for 43 receptions and eight touchdowns. Anchoring the defense is junior linebacker Marlon Bourdess (5-9, 180), an all-conference selection.

CHECKING IN: Senior Vince Rodriguez (6-3, 240), also a punter, is the lone veteran lineman. He will get help from seniors Omar Ramirez (5-6, 230) and William Sexton.

*

Channel Islands

COACH: Joel Gershon, 23rd year

LAST SEASON: 3-7, 1-6, last in Marmonte League.

COMING BACK: With returning quarterback Charles Merricks electing not to play, the Raiders must rely on an experienced defense that includes linebackers Craig Knight and Pat Hernandez and safeties Bobby Villavicencio and Ryan Brunsell. Defensive end Christmas Valoaga (6-6, 215) is a college prospect. The left side of the offensive line is strong with guard Ray Rivera (6-4, 285) and tackle Roger Nadeau (6-4, 265).

CHECKING IN: Junior Ray Carmel has shown great quickness and will start at running back. Senior Nick Ciari and junior Bronson Lucas are battling to replace Merricks.

*

Cleveland

COACH: Joe Santellano, 4th year

LAST SEASON: 7-4, 5-2, third in Northwest Valley Conference.

Running backs Kevin Reaux (5-10, 208) and Deywine Adams are the only returning players with experience.

CHECKING IN: Just about everybody. Jaron Brignac replaces his brother, Junior, at one receiver slot. Anthony Lewis, Josue Garcia and Darrence Williams also will get a look. Inexperienced senior Emory Holmes will get a shot at tailback.

OUTLOOK: Even Santellano concedes this is a rebuilding year. Having only 30 players on the roster doesn’t help.

Senior tight end Ron Quarterman (6-3, 200) is a blocking and receiving threat.

CHECKING IN: Senior Nick Rita (5-10, 175), who threw only four passes last season, moves from wide receiver to quarterback. Junior tailbacks Howard Johnson (5-8, 160) and Anthony Trejo (5-10, 165) are battling for the starting job. Junior Eric Nelson (6 feet, 235) is among the Celts’ best defensive linemen.

OUTLOOK: Crespi traditionally makes a good showing in one of the toughest leagues in Southern California. This year should be no exception, although an inexperienced backfield must mature quickly.

*

El Camino Real

COACH: Bob Ganssle, 3rd year

LAST SEASON: 5-6-1, 4-3, fourth in Northwest Valley Conference.

COMING BACK: Ganssle believes junior tailback Quincy Wright (5-8, 175) might be the best in the Valley after gaining more than 1,000 yards last year. J. D. Sumlin (5-9, 210) will anchor the defense at linebacker and Greg Hulett (6-2, 260) heads an offensive line loaded with size and potential.

CHECKING IN: Senior Victor Covarrubias (6 feet, 200), a projected starter at fullback and linebacker, has impressed Weiss in workouts since transferrring from Cleveland.

OUTLOOK: The Contenders could be in for a winning season if they give Greer time to throw and improve their tackling from last year.

*

Fillmore

Seniors Sako Spruill (5-7, 180) and Bryan Benz (5-10, 165) will lead the defense at middle linebacker and strong safety.

CHECKING IN: Basketball is the favorite sport of senior wide receiver Steve Haas (6-2, 165), but Pinkston expects him to play an important role in the Dynamiters’ offense.

OUTLOOK: Glendale is stronger and more physical than a year ago but still will be hard-pressed to improve its 1-4 league record of the past two seasons.

*

Granada Hills

COACH: Brad Ratcliff, 2nd year

LAST SEASON: 0-10, 0-7, last in Northwest Valley Conference.

COMING BACK: The Highlanders threw a group of young players to the wolves last season. At least quarterback Ricky Mathiesen (6 feet, 160) has a year of experience. Senior tailback Frank Rosario (5-9, 165) looked reliable at the end of last season.

CHECKING IN: Tight end Leon Pimky (6-3, 215) was among the most promising players on the Highlander basketball team last year. The same is expected of him on the field. Junior defensive back Jason DeJong (6-2, 175) is also a promising receiver and defensive back.

OUTLOOK: Granada Hills has to be better than last year. If the Highlanders don’t get too beat up in nonconference games against Hart, Royal and Simi Valley, they might even steal a conference victory or two.

*

Grant

COACH: Bill Foster, 12th year

LAST SEASON: 0-10, 0-7, last in Valley Pac-8 Conference.

COMING BACK: Twelve starters return, including senior running back Luis Escamilla (5-9, 175), who led the Lancers with 418 yards and four touchdowns. Senior tackle Larry Sutton (6-3, 290) is the only other returning starter on offense, while senior end Seth Schienle and senior linebacker Todd Hourigan are the only returners on defense.

CHECKING IN: Senior quarterback Travis Carroll should put up big numbers in the region’s best run-and-shoot offense. Junior running back Chris Wright and senior receiver Scott Collins (6-5, 205) are new weapons.

OUTLOOK: Having finally won a section title for Herrington last year, the Indians should win their sixth consecutive league title.

CHECKING IN: Bennett plans to throw more with the addition of junior quarterback John Terzian, a standout on the junior varsity last season. Junior defensive back Brent Pantell is sure-handed and probably will play a skill position on offense. Junior running back Justin Logan will share duty with Hornblower. Junior tackle Erik Carlson (6-3, 222) is among three linemen expected to play both ways.

OUTLOOK: It likely will remain a tough go for the Wolverines, who spent the past two seasons in the Camino Real League after winning only two games in two seasons in the Mission League.

*

LAST SEASON: 3-7, 0-5, last in Golden League.

Fullback Will Demps runs well and is a good receiver.

CHECKING IN: Junior quarterback Camy Smith started five games last season. Sophomore running back Brandon McElvaine looks promising, as do receivers Brian Floyd, a 6-5 sophomore, and senior Alex Avina. Junior linebacker Marco Martinez had three sacks in a shutout victory last week.

Junior Welser Maltez is back at quarterback, but senior inside linebacker Brian Cousens (6 feet, 215) and senior cornerback Frank Maltez are the only returning defensive starters.

CHECKING IN: Junior Hamlik Parsanian (6-1, 213) is expected to be a two-way starter at guard and defensive tackle.

LAST SEASON: 12-1, 7-0, Northwest Valley Conference champion.

COMING BACK: In one year, previously unheralded senior quarterback Calvin Zinck (6-2, 220) has become a Division I prospect. Cornerback-turned-tailback Jaret Harris, receiver Waking Bailey and receiver Aaron Lewis give the Golden Cougars plenty of speed on offense.

CHECKING IN: Francola’s biggest concern is the defense. Seniors Byron Williams (6-1, 205), Tommy Gales and Gary Goss were all on the varsity team last year but must take on critical leadership roles.

OUTLOOK: It won’t be as easy as last year, but the Golden Cougars stand a good chance of repeating.

*

Littlerock

COACH: Jim Bauer, 7th year

LAST SEASON: 4-6, 2-3, tied for third in Golden League.

COMING BACK: Senior Devon Reese is a projected 1,000-yard rusher. He totaled 737 yards in five games two years ago filling in for an injured starter. Reese and senior tight end Dan Marino both have grade-point averages better than 3.5 and should be leaders. Senior Bryant Perez (6-3, 260) and junior Rene Torres (5-7, 200) return to the offensive line.

CHECKING IN: Receivers Frank Landano and Dion Johnson, running backs Mike Carger and Isaac Sandoval, and quarterback Myles Meeden hope to bolster the offense. Bauer believes junior linebacker Conrad Castrellon is a budding Division I prospect.

OUTLOOK: While some have tabbed the Lobos for the cellar, Bauer all but guarantees they won’t finish last.

LAST SEASON: 11-1, independent.

COMING BACK: Only two starters return: quarterback Robert Neumann and tailback-cornerback Carlease Clark, both seniors. Neumann passed for 747 yards and 10 touchdowns with only two interceptions last year. Clark ran for 403 yards and six touchdowns as a reserve.

CHECKING IN: The line needs help and junior tackle Tim Acord (6-4, 275) and freshman guard John Emelio (6-3, 240) must learn quickly. Junior Kevin Bentley (5-11, 215) starts at linebacker after transferring from Chatsworth. Senior safety Tommie Sykes played some last year.

OUTLOOK: The Mounties’ schedule includes such cupcake opponents as Sherman Indian, Salesian and Daniel Murphy. Neumann and Clark are solid but the rest of the team is unproven.

LAST SEASON: 13-1, 7-0, Marmonte League champion.

COMING BACK: Chris Czernek (5-10, 170) set state passing records with 4,360 yards and 45 touchdowns last season. Only Patrick Reddick (5-9, 165) returns at receiver, but with 61 catches for 1,122 yards, he might be the region’s finest. Brian Nelson is a two-way tackle and Garrett Hobba will play inside linebacker and running back. Linebacker Brian Crain is another experienced defender.

CHECKING IN: Russell Thomas, Paul Sanford and converted quarterbacks Jake Farrel and Nick Czernek (Chris’s brother) will play receiver. Ryan Sullivan will get more playing time at running back.

OUTLOOK: Another 13-1 season is unlikely, but the Panthers should be in the thick of the league title hunt.

*

Nordhoff

COACH: Cliff Farrar, 10th season.

LAST SEASON: 5-6, 2-2, third in Frontier League.

COMING BACK: Senior Russell Farrar starts at fullback and linebacker for the second consecutive year. Last season he rushed for 842 yards and was an all-league linebacker. Senior Matt Merritt (6-4, 240) is among the league’s best offensive tackles. Seniors Jim Musick and Matt Cresto will rotate at quarterback, as they have for their entire high school careers. Neither was effective last season.

CHECKING IN: The development of guards Tom McInerny (5-11, 210) and Justin Morris (6 feet, 200), both seniors and first-year starters, is critical if Nordhoff is to have a winning season.

OUTLOOK: Though they are not an especially talented team, the Rangers will be in league title contention because of coaching, toughness and execution.

CHECKING IN: The Huskies’ linebacker corps will get a boost from senior transfers Devon Rose (6 feet, 205), from Granada Hills, and Adam Brubaker, from Burbank.

OUTLOOK: The Huskies mastered the double wing-T offense last season and it will pay huge dividends this year. Only Sylmar stands in their path.

*

Notre Dame

COACH: Kevin Rooney, 17th year

LAST SEASON: 11-1, 5-0, Mission League champion.

COMING BACK: Senior Justin Fargas, who rushed for 532 yards as a fullback last season, moves to tailback. Senior defensive back Jorge Piedra, who had six interceptions last season, also will start at quarterback after attempting only five passes last season. OUTLOOK: The Eagles won league titles in 1993 and ‘94, but now the talent just isn’t quite there.

Senior linebacker Donald Arguelles (6-1, 230) and senior defensive back Mark Valdivia played in only three games last season after transferring from Rio Mesa.

COACH: Jeff Williams, 6th year

LAST SEASON: 4-6, 2-3, tied for third in Golden League.

COMING BACK: Running back Jan Brown (1,146 rushing yards last year), linebacker Malosi Leonard, linebacker Pat Opperman, linebacker Manny Flores and guard Drew Bledsoe are third-year starting seniors. Also among 18 returning starters are junior quarterback Grant Livermont, who should be the best in the league, and tight end Matt Leonard, a Division I prospect. Steve Maher, Scott Cundiff and Vincent Sandoval also return on an offensive line that averages 6-3, 260 pounds. Watch out for all-purpose back Jeremy Coleman.

CHECKING IN: Monroe transfer Jason Anderson will share ball-carrying duties with Brown, giving the Falcons the top 1-2 ground punch in the league. Anderson and Brown combined for 2,500 yards rushing last year.

OUTLOOK: For all of Palmdale’s experience, Williams predicts a third-place finish.

*

Paraclete

COACH: Steve Hagerty, 5th year

LAST SEASON: 7-6, 2-3, fourth in High Desert League.

COMING BACK: All the key players return from last year’s Division X semifinalist--except one: Ben Joyce, an All-Division X quarterback. Jesse Loa, a two-time all-division receiver, and all-league running back Sal Iabichella return for their senior seasons. Junior Josh Foster (6-6, 225) is an intimidating force at tight end.

CHECKING IN: Junior varsity standouts Rich Caton and Tommy Breech are high on Hagerty’s list in his search to find a replacement for Joyce.

OUTLOOK: If a quarterback emerges, the Spirits will be tough. If not, their best hope is another Cinderella playoff run.

*

Poly

COACH: Tim Feeley, 3rd year

LAST SEASON: 2-8, 1-6, seventh in Valley Pac-8 Conference.

COMING BACK: Ten starters return, including junior running back Terrance Brant, who rushed for 212 yards in a limited role last year. Senior defensive ends Alex Aguilar (6-3, 240) and Mike Renteria (6-3, 245) are Division I prospects. Senior tackle Chris Colon (6-4, 325) has size and experience.

CHECKING IN: Running back Jesse Villareal and quarterback Vadim Valcu, both juniors, led the junior varsity to a conference championship last season.

OUTLOOK: The Parrots are young--especially in the skill positions--and will need to mature quickly to have a winning season.

*

Quartz Hill

COACH: John Albee, 29th year

LAST SEASON: 8-3, 4-1, second in Golden League.

COMING BACK: Two of the team’s top three players return--Jacob Waasdorp, a linebacker and fullback, is the league’s best defender; running back Jeremiah Harris rushed for 1,354 yards and 14 touchdowns last year. Senior Mike Kott and junior David Fetters were all-league linebackers in 1995. Don Simmons and John Garcilazo return to the offensive line.

CHECKING IN: Four impact players have transferred in. Ron Beeson, a wide receiver and defensive back from Mojave, will play both ways. Kenny Carlton, from Sylmar, rounds out a strong linebacking crew. His cousin, Doug Carlton, a wide receiver from Patch High in Germany, and Chris Marshall, an offensive lineman from Antelope Valley Christian, also could start.

OUTLOOK: The Rebels might be better than they were last year.

*

Reseda

COACH: Joel Schaeffer, 19th year

LAST SEASON: 11-3, 5-2, tied for second in Valley Pac-8 Conference.

COMING BACK: The defending City Section 3-A Division champions have a decent nucleus of returning starters, including Jeremiah Harrison, a 6-2, 210-pound senior guard and linebacker, senior quarterback Jamaal Washington, and Tony De La Torre and Michael Martin (6-3, 190), both senior wide receivers and defensive backs.

CHECKING IN: Seniors Richard Jackson, a tailback, and Eric Hoggat, a wide receiver, step into the spotlight from their limited roles last season.

OUTLOOK: This is a rebuilding year for the Regents, but that doesn’t mean they will be pushovers. Making the playoffs is a certainty.

*

Rio Mesa

COACH: George Contreras, 3rd year

LAST SEASON: 2-8, 1-6, tied for seventh in Channel League.

COMING BACK: Senior quarterback Farhaad Azimi (6-2, 195) enters his third varsity season. Senior running backs Carl Richardson and Nate Haros rushed for 365 and 275 yards, respectively, last season. Seniors Richard Almanza (5-11, 235) and Will Ferrell (6-5, 270) are three-year starters on the offensive line. Senior tackle Jess Ortiz (6-6, 350) is a two-year starter.

CHECKING IN: Junior free safety Frank McBride moves up from the junior varsity and senior defensive back Felipe Torres has never played football. Senior guard Kristofer Meza (5-11, 280) adds to a big offensive line.

OUTLOOK: With 16 returning starters, improvement is likely. Azimi “has really blossomed” during practice, Contreras said. Defense could be a weakness.

*

Royal

COACH: Gene Uebelhardt, 9th year

LAST SEASON: 3-7, 2-5, tied for fifth in Marmonte League.

COMING BACK: Ryan Nielsen, perhaps the best player in the league, is back for his third season at tight end and linebacker. However, he doesn’t have much of a supporting cast. Junior Bryant Phipps took over at running back in midseason and rushed for nearly 400 yards. Ray Molina will play fullback and defensive tackle. Senior guard Doug Wilson is a three-year starter.

CHECKING IN: Junior quarterback Braden Fien provides a different style than his brother, Ryan, who starred at Royal and is playing quarterback at Idaho. Braden is faster but lacks Ryan’s arm strength. Brian Gilmore and Ryan Gallioso are the receivers.

OUTLOOK: In a league full of experienced teams with seasoned quarterbacks, Royal cannot afford to take too long to develop its young players.

*

St. Bonaventure

COACH: Jon Mack, 7th season.

LAST SEASON: 8-4, 2-2, third in Tri-Valley League.

COMING BACK: Senior quarterback Teohua Sanchez (5-11, 175) passed for 1,926 yards and 13 touchdowns last season but must continue to develop. Receiver Pepe Villasenor had 66 catches for 661 yards and tight end Joe Byrum (6-3, 210) had 35 catches for 521 yards last year. Defensive tackle David Bernal (6-1, 300) had 14 sacks and 90 tackles last season and guard Ben Miller (5-10, 273) is a third-year starter.

CHECKING IN: Andre Pinedo, a senior transfer from Santa Clara, will probably start at tailback. Center Eric Purdue and tackles Andrew Jones (6-4, 250) and Robert Winson (6-3, 224) are all first-year starters and question marks.

OUTLOOK: The Seraphs can’t win the Tri-Valley title without a victory over one or both of the league powers--Bishop Diego and Carpinteria. A 7-3 finish is likely.

*

St. Francis

COACH: Bill Redell, 4th year

LAST SEASON: 7-3, 2-3, fourth in Mission League.

COMING BACK: Senior tailback Tre Milton, who rushed for 857 yards and nine touchdowns last season, is poised to lead the Golden Knights’ attack. Milton also caught 15 passes and scored a team-high 11 touchdowns. Senior Mike Siorda, a defensive back and receiver, led the Golden Knights with three interceptions and had 13 receptions for 305 yards. Senior Chris Palic kicked 24 extra points in 28 attempts and was five for five on field goals. Senior tackle Robert Eland (6-1, 240) was a second-team all-league selection.

CHECKING IN: Sophomore two-way tackle Ariel Bellofiore is 6-4 and 275 pounds. Junior tackle Taylor Ketchum (6-3, 260) adds to an offensive line that Redell says is the team’s strength. Other promising newcomers include junior Darius Brown, a tailback and defensive back, and junior linebacker Gabby Velasquez.

OUTLOOK: Among 21 returning players, 13 were starters. However, many starters were sophomores. St. Francis, which won its first six games last season but failed to make the playoffs, again might struggle to reach postseason play.

*

San Fernando

COACH: Sean Blunt, 4th year

LAST SEASON: 2-8, 2-5, sixth in Northwest Valley Conference.

COMING BACK: Derrell Daniels, who was expected to be the Tigers’ best returning player, transferred under open enrollment to Sylmar, leaving linebacker Alex Luna (6-1, 215) and running back Mike Gomez as the most experienced players.

CHECKING IN: Blunt is looking for several players to fill the shoes of All-City multipurpose backs Brandon Campbell and Keijuan Douglas. Sean Atkins was the leader of the frosh-soph team and will play at either tailback or quarterback, along with Cleveland transfer Terrell Stanley.

OUTLOOK: As always, San Fernando’s speed poses problems for opponents, but the Tigers are a year away from title contention.

*

Santa Clara

COACH: John Loranzana, 1st season.

LAST SEASON: 1-9, 0-4, last in Frontier League.

COMING BACK: Senior fullback Mike Moon (5-8, 190) averaged more than six yards a carry last season and was also an all-league linebacker. Senior Vince Ines will start at halfback and defensive back after playing only defense last year. Receiver Dennis Rayborn and lineman George Gonzalez are returning starters.

CHECKING IN: Junior and first-year starting quarterback Danny Acosta (5-7, 165) must run an option attack with little protection. Senior Jeff Bensor (6-2, 245) will be a two-way starting lineman in his first varsity season.

OUTLOOK: A once-proud program has been reduced to ruins. Anything better than another 1-9 season would be a pleasant surprise.

*

Santa Paula

COACH: Robert Mumford, 1st season.

LAST SEASON: 3-7, 1-3, fourth in Frontier League.

COMING BACK: Junior quarterback Willie Zavala (6-1, 150) is elusive and athletic. He passed for 947 yards and eight touchdowns last year, but also threw 13 interceptions. Fullback Aaron Pettitt (6-3, 230) leads the way for tiny senior tailback Freddy Sanchez (5-4, 140), who carried only 21 times for 148 yards last year. Senior Ryan Wadkowski (6-4, 260) starts at left tackle and nose guard.

CHECKING IN: Junior tight end Joey Leon (5-7, 170) is a small but sturdy starter with good hands and no fear. Junior tailback Jorge Torres is a hard runner who can spell Sanchez. Junior Josh Chavez starts at cornerback and is a reserve quarterback. Last season he passed for 383 yards in a junior varsity victory over Moorpark. Senior defensive end Peter Hurtado will start after sitting out last season.

OUTLOOK: Four victories would be an accomplishment given the Cardinals’ schedule.

*

Saugus

COACH: Jack Bowman, 6th year

LAST SEASON: 6-5, 3-1, second in Golden League.

COMING BACK: Seniors Kevin Schmitz (6 feet, 245), Erien Hodge (6-4, 270) and Howie Titzel (6-2, 246) lead an offensive line that averages 265 pounds. Senior Mark Pecaro, a fullback and linebacker, punishes people on both sides of the ball. Lineman Ryan Manheim and linebacker Kevin Giberson lead an experienced defense. Defensive backs Brandon Alvarado and Chad Hilton, and wide receiver Gregg Johnson were second-team all-league picks.

CHECKING IN: Quarterback Chris Kobe takes over after passing for 618 yards in a backup role last year. He will be joined by receivers Joey Ceballos and Steve Van Duzee. Linebacker Tim Dell and defensive end Mark Copeland look promising.

OUTLOOK: The Centurions again are the best bet to dethrone Hart.

*

Simi Valley

COACH: Roger McCamy, 4th year

LAST SEASON: 3-7, 2-5, tied for fifth in Marmonte League.

COMING BACK: John Gonzalez, a receiver, defensive back and the league’s best punter and kicker, is Mr. Versatile for the Pioneers. Left-hander Dave Krewson, injured most of last season, is the quarterback. Chad Troxler (6 feet, 270), a guard and linebacker, and Joe Sarcinella (6-4, 250), a two-way lineman, are Simi Valley’s best interior players.

CHECKING IN: Linebacker Kevin Bennett, brother of former Pioneer quarterback Eric Bennett, is solid. Mike Boyd joins Gonzalez in the secondary. Tony Safechuck and Chad Basilone are competing at running back.

OUTLOOK: Simi Valley wants to throw the ball, but its passing game is unproven compared to other league teams.

*

Sylmar

COACH: Jeff Engilman, 10th year

LAST SEASON: 11-1, 7-0, Valley Pac-8 Conference champion.

COMING BACK: Eleven starters return for a perennial powerhouse. Senior quarterback Chris Cervantes (6-1, 165), who passed for 10 touchdowns, had the conference’s best completion rate last season. Junior Shaun Avalos (6-1, 180), an All-City selection, will start at wide receiver and strong safety and is also the place kicker. Junior two-way tackle Ray Solis (6-4, 270) is one of the region’s finest, as is senior tight end Jose Ochoa (6-4, 245), a Division I prospect.

CHECKING IN: Transfers Derrell Daniels (6-2, 215), a linebacker from San Fernando; Donald Carpenter (6-1, 190), a running back from Taft; and Errol Bowen (6-1, 190), a defensive back from Burbank, reinforce a proven team.

OUTLOOK: With an outstanding offensive line and an impressive defense, Sylmar will continue to build on its 46-game conference winning streak.

*

Taft

COACH: Troy Starr, 5th year

LAST SEASON: 7-3-1, 6-1, second in Northwest Valley Conference

COMING BACK: The Toreadors return 10 starters, including senior Nick DiPadova (6 feet, 185), one of the most consistent quarterbacks in the City Section. Receiver Sedric Hurns (5-10, 180) shifts to tailback. Linebackers Alex Scheer (6-0, 190) and junior Tyler Brennan (6-1, 190) lead the defense.

CHECKING IN: Taft’s receiving corps was bolstered by the addition of four transfers, including Van Nuys’ Damon Coleman and Montclair Prep’s Keith Johnson. Tailback Marquis Brignac, who starred for the frosh-soph team, will split time with Hurns.

OUTLOOK: Taft was the only conference team to challenge Kennedy last season, losing by six points. It might be that close again.

*

Thousand Oaks

COACH: Mike Kelly, 2nd year

LAST SEASON: 9-3, 6-1, second in Marmonte League.

COMING BACK: Scott McEwan is a third-year starter and one of the best quarterbacks in the state. Barrett Grindle (6-3, 180) is his go-to receiver. Greg Smith is the only returning offensive lineman. Several starters return on defense, including safety Josh Casillas, linebacker Jud Southwell, and linemen Ryan Tardif and Chance Redmond. All four might see time on offense as well.

CHECKING IN: Tight end Carlos Acosta (260 pounds), a junior, is big and quick. Quick and elusive Eleo Cuadra and punishing Byron Caballeros will split time at running back. Tight ends Bryan Hill and Jeff Wyly should catch some of McEwan’s passes.

OUTLOOK: As usual, the Lancers will be in the thick of the Marmonte race along with Westlake and Newbury Park.

*

Valencia

COACH: Brian Stiman, 2nd year

LAST SEASON: 2-8, independent.

COMING BACK: Almost everybody. Because the Vikings had no seniors in 1995, their first varsity season, 20 players return with experience for their first season in the Foothill League. Senior running back Donavan Calhoun (1,411 yards, 19 touchdowns) is the league’s best. Senior quarterback Kenny Broadous-Taylor might have the best arm in the league. Senior receiver Caleb Willis caught 30 passes last year. Senior offensive tackle Ashton Holbrook (6-3, 280) is one of few giants on the 42-man roster.

CHECKING IN: Junior receiver Michael Swanson (6-2) is a big target to complement Willis.

OUTLOOK: After an easy first five weeks, Valencia could get hammered in league play.

*

Van Nuys

COACH: Mark Pomerantz, 2nd year

LAST SEASON: 4-6, 3-4, tied for fifth in Valley Pac-8 Conference.

COMING BACK: Senior quarterback Robert Williamson (6 feet, 195), who completed 98 of 231 passes for 1,044 yards and 10 touchdowns, threw more passes than any other area City Section player last year. But experience in the skill positions ends there. Senior fullback Raul Torres (5-10, 210) had just 21 carries for 93 yards and a touchdown. Valeriano Landeros (6-3, 205), a tight end and linebacker, also returns.

CHECKING IN: Pomerantz thinks highly of senior running back Carlos Mack, who had only six carries last year, and newcomer Andre Peoples, a sophomore tailback.

OUTLOOK: With an experienced quarterback and defense, Van Nuys has the tools to finish somewhere in the middle of the pack.

*

Ventura

COACH: Phil McCune, 12th year

LAST SEASON: 5-5, 4-3, tied for third in Channel League.

COMING BACK: Senior tailback Jeramie Jackson, who rushed for 316 yards last season, is among the league’s best athletes. Senior fullback Vinny Loffelmann (5-11, 195), who rushed for 232 yards, solidifies the ground game. Senior tight end Andrew Gudaz (6-1, 210) had 13 catches last season. Junior linebacker Joe Martinez (6-2, 220) is among the region’s best defensive players. Senior guards Chris Patacil and Joey Hays both are 6-1, 250.

CHECKING IN: Senior tackle Robert Hoffman (6-3, 290) will add to what should be an improved defensive line. Junior linebacker Mark McKenney (6-1, 190) and junior defensive back Aaron Gaitan are among other promising newcomers to a defense McCune says “must carry the load.”

OUTLOOK: Ventura likely will have to fight for a playoff spot. Only seven starters return and the Cougars will miss quarterback Kyle Schommer, who passed for 1,955 yards last season.

*

Verdugo Hills

COACH: Don Scott, 2nd year

LAST SEASON: 7-5, 5-2, tied for second in Northern Conference

COMING BACK: The Dons return several key components to their most successful team in more than a decade. Quarterback Ethan Slimak (5-11, 165), running back Sean Standley (6-1, 210) and wide receiver Charlie Coronado (6-3, 185) all carried Verdugo Hills at times. Junior linebacker Evan Armstrong (6-3, 230) might be the best prospect on the team.

CHECKING IN: With only 27 players, Scott is looking for contributions from everyone. Senior lineman Will Miller (6-3, 235) has the size and ability to play both ways. Junior Juan Romero will fill in at linebacker and fullback.

OUTLOOK: If the Dons stay injury-free, they have enough front-line talent for a repeat of 1995.

*

Viewpoint

COACH: Derek McIntyre, 1st year

LAST SEASON: 3-5, 1-3, fourth in Heritage League.

COMING BACK: Senior J.R. Sichel (6 feet, 170), a quarterback and defensive end, set numerous school passing records last season. Senior Rami Shaaraway (6 feet, 150), a wide receiver and linebacker, should be one of his favorite targets this season.

CHECKING IN: Freshman Sherwin Shilati, a 5-4 running back and defensive back, should give the Patriots added speed on both sides of the ball. Sophomore lineman Joel Grant (5-8, 215) adds some bulk to the offensive and defensive lines.

OUTLOOK: With improved size and more players on the team, the Patriots should improve on last year’s finish.

*

Village Christian

COACH: Mike Plaisance, 16th year

LAST SEASON: 7-3, 4-1, second in Alpha League.

COMING BACK: Six all-league players return for the Crusaders, including running back Aaron Funk, who led the team with 778 yards last season. Funk, Brian Agnor and Darin Chu return to a secondary that led the league in interceptions.

CHECKING IN: Plaisance says that junior varsity quarterback Jeff Johnston is more than an adequate varsity player. David Romberger will be a valuable backup at fullback and tailback. Tony DeYoung (6-2, 200) will have an immediate impact on both lines.

OUTLOOK: The Crusaders will be balanced, but lack a big-play threat. Bridesmaids once again.

*

Westlake

COACH: Jim Benkert, 8th year

LAST SEASON: 7-5-1, 4-3, third in Marmonte League.

COMING BACK: Casey Preston passed for 1,376 yards last year and looked great during the summer. Fullback Jon Weems (610 yards) has moved to tailback. On defense, lineman Scott Nessel, linebacker Bobby DeMars (6-4, 235) and safety Jeremy Golden are among the best in the league.

CHECKING IN: Junior fullback J.R. Ross and senior tight end Scott Swaving (6-6, 210) are solid blockers. Big things are expected of Joey Cuppari, who moved to receiver after intercepting nine passes last season. Matt Goldstein is a junior linebacker with potential.

OUTLOOK: Westlake had an outstanding summer and is picked my most coaches to win the league title. An inexperienced offensive line is the question mark.
