Savona Leads Irvine in Shutout of Sea Kings

Irvine scored in each of the first three quarters on its way to defeating Corona del Mar, 21-0, Thursday night in a Sea View League opener at Newport Harbor High.

The Vaqueros, who improved to 4-2, 1-0 on league, opened the scoring in the first quarter when Jake Savona ran in from 11 yards.

Irvine increased its lead to 14-0 in the second quarter when Savona, who carried the ball five times for 33 yards in the game, scored his second touchdown on a five-yard run. Savona also had four catches for 23 yards.

Irvine’s final touchdown came in the third quarter on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Jared Flint to Creed Paulson. Flint completed 11 of 16 passes for 123 yards.

Al Williams led Irvine’s ground attack, rushing 16 times for 110 yards. Ryan Brucker caught four passes for 65 yards for the Vaqueros.

Corona del Mar’s Mike McClellan completed 19 of 34 passes for 189 yards and one interception.

Corona del Mar’s George Sumner had eight catches for 85 yards, and Tom O’Meara caught seven passes for 86 yards.

Corona del Mar dropped to 3-3, 0-1.
