SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

In a game that featured two running teams, only one was able to run.

Tony Walker rushed 30 times for 178 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Antelopes to a 35-6 Golden League victory over Littlerock Friday night at Antelope Valley.

The Lobos, who averaged 250 yards rushing per game as the region’s No. 1 rushing team among Southern Section schools, were held to 125 yards on the ground.

“The offensive line opened up a lot of holes for me, and that was the key to our game,” Walker said.

Antelope Valley dominated the first half, holding Littlerock (6-2, 1-1 in league) to 15 yards of offense and no first downs. The Lobos passed only once and it was incomplete.

The Antelopes (5-1, 1-0) scored on their first three possessions, including drives of 64 and 75 yards en route to a 28-0 halftime lead.

“I’m proud of these kids,” Antelope Valley Coach Brent Newcomb said. “They stepped it up all game long. Long Beach Poly beat us up pretty bad, and we had to come out and play tough tonight.

“[Last week’s] bye week really helped us.”

Justin Mobley opened the scoring on a 14-yard pass to Aaron Yost, capping a drive that consumed 7 minutes 18 seconds.

Walker scored on a six-yard run two plays after Devon Reese fumbled a punt at his 14-yard line.

Mobley then connected on a 26-yard touchdown pass to Joe Manning to make it 21-0 with 5:10 left in the half.

Devon Reese, who entered the game with 750 yards rushing, finished with 57 yards in 11 carries, including a five-yard touchdown for the Lobos with 9:16 left.

Michael Woods, who entered the game with 819 yards rushing for Littlerock, was held to 47 in 13 carries.

Walker stole the show as the Antelopes improved to 5-0 against Littlerock, outscoring the Lobos, 207-52, in those contests.

“[Walker] makes our team go and he’s one of the best backs I’ve ever seen,” Newcomb said. “And I’ve been here for [28 years].”

The Lobos committed only two turnovers, but they couldn’t stop the two-time defending champion Antelopes, who finished with 289 yards of offense.
