Top-Ranked Lancer Girls Run to Title

Orange Lutheran began what it hopes will be a title run Friday at the Mt. San Antonio Cross-Country Invitational in Walnut.

The Lancer girls, ranked first in Division V, easily won the team sweepstakes race with 34 points. Santa Maria St. Joseph was second (74).

“This is a dress rehearsal for later on in the year,” Lancer Coach Jonathan Zimmerman said. “We wanted to do well here.”

Senior Kristin Groncy was a key performer in Orange Lutheran’s success, running the course in 19 minutes 22 seconds, nine seconds behind race winner Christina Sanchez of McFarland.

In Division IV of the boys’ sweepstakes, Corona del Mar edged Costa Mesa, 100-101, but were edged by the Mustangs’ team time, 84:01 to 84:27.

Senior Tyler Beardslee paced the Sea Kings with a fourth-place finish in 16:11. Sophomore Bruce Hancock led the Mustangs with a sixth-place finish in 16:23.

The Tustin boys, who won the Orange County Championships last weekend, were edged by San Francisco St. Ignatius for the Division III team sweepstakes title, 94-106.
