El Toro Gets Share of Title in Water Polo

Fourth-ranked El Toro clinched at least a share of the Sea View League water polo title Wednesday with a 13-8 victory over Santa Margarita (12-6, 3-1).

El Toro (15-6, 4-0), which led, 4-3, at the half, scored six third-quarter goals to seal the victory. Mark Tilton led El Toro with five goals and teammate Matt Sakatani had four. Barry Duckworth had 10 saves for the Chargers.

In other league games:

Corona del Mar 4, Newport Harbor 1--Billy Messenger’s seven saves sparked Corona del Mar.

Irvine 14, Woodbridge 8--John Webb scored five goals for Irvine (6-18, 1-3). Tom Simmons scored six goals for Woodbridge.

In the Century League:

Foothill 26, Santa Ana Valley 11--Matt Ellis had five goals and Jeff Pfleuger had four for host Foothill (19-1, 4-0), ranked No. 1 in the county and Division I.

Villa Park 19, El Modena 5--Villa Park took a 13-0 lead at the end of the second quarter. Kyle Baumgarner had six goals and seven assists for the No. 2 Spartans (20-4, 4-0).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 11, Katella 6--Eighth-ranked El Dorado (15-5, 4-0) rallied from a three-goal deficit in the first quarter, scoring four third-quarter goals to take an 8-6 lead. Luke Byward led El Dorado with five goals and Kendall Benson added 11.

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 22, Troy 10--Dave Ploog scored seven goals, Jeremy Greenberg had six and Josh Drysol added five for La Habra (12-7, 3-1).

Sunny Hills 21, Fullerton 7--Alex Stupin scored seven goals for host Sunny Hills (12-12, 3-1), which clinched a playoff berth.

In the Golden West League:

Tustin 8, Saddleback 7--Mike Foley scored the winning goal with three minutes left. Foley led the Tillers with four goals and Jonathon Smalley had two.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 13, Magnolia 11 (OT)--Cory Bush scored two goals and Matt Flesher had one in overtime for ninth-ranked Brea. Brea’s Michael Flood sent the game into overtime with a goal with 25 seconds left. Jason Hart had 13 saves for the Wildcats (15-4, 6-0). Kevin Marsh had four goals to lead Magnolia (4-2 in league).

Valencia 9, Western 7--Greg Schlentz, who had three goals, and Brett Davis, who had two, each scored fourth-quarter goals to break a 7-7 tie for host Valencia (9-8, 3-3). Jace Crispin scored six goals for Western (12-10, 1-4).

In the Sunset League:

Los Alamitos 14, Marina 5--Third-ranked Los Alamitos had little trouble against Marina, keeping the Vikings scoreless in the second and third quarters. Tyler Wawrzynski had four goals to lead Los Alamitos (18-5, 4-0), which is ranked No. 1 in Division II.

In Pacific Coast League boys’ cross-country:

Estancia 25, University 31--Martin Brix continued his unbeaten league streak, finishing in 16:07 for University (2-3). The second- through sixth-place finishers were less than 10 seconds apart. Estancia is 3-2.

Laguna Hills 23, Aliso Niguel 36--William Gachuze finished second in 15 minutes 39 seconds over the three-mile course at Laguna Hills for the host Hawks (4-1). Ethan Friend won the race in 15:38 for Aliso Niguel (1-4).

In Pacific Coast League girls’ cross-country:

University 18, Estancia 45--Allyson Marquand remained undefeated in league, winning the meet in 17:03 for fifth-ranked University (5-0). Teammate Misha Wilson finished second in 18:31 at Mason Park in Irvine.

In Century League girls’ volleyball:

Villa Park 3, Santa Ana Valley 0--Kelly Culver had five kills and five blocks in the 15-7, 15-2, 15-8 victory for Villa Park (10-4, 6-2).

In the Golden West League:

Rosary 3, Tustin 2--Sarah Cody had 23 kills and Vanessa Arias had 11 digs and four aces for host Rosary (5-6, 4-3), which won, 15-5, 15-6, 10-15, 12-15, 15-4.

Saddleback 3, Westminster 1--Elsa Paredes had 14 kills for host Saddleback (3-10, 1-6), which won, 15-9, 15-13, 5-15, 15-13.
