SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It is definitely the Buena High tournament, from its organization to its champion.

Renae Hofmann scored 21 points and center Nicole Greathouse added 15 points and 17 rebounds as the Bulldogs trounced Santa Barbara, 62-26, to win their own tournament Saturday night at Buena.

It marked the 18th time in 20 years that Buena (4-0) has won the event.

“Overall, we did pretty good, but this is just the beginning of our season,” said Hofmann, who made eight of 15 shots, including four of seven from three-point range.

She also had five rebounds and two steals.

“This tournament prepares us for the rest of the year,” Hofmann said.

Consider the Bulldogs prepared.

Their halftime advantage was 31-17, but that was only the half of it.

Buena held Santa Barbara (3-4) scoreless in the third quarter, and the Dons managed only nine points in the fourth quarter, five after the Bulldogs’ starting lineup retired to the bench with 3:45 to play.

Santa Barbara committed turnovers on four consecutive possessions in one stretch of the third quarter, and missed all six of its shots in the quarter.

Meanwhile, Buena ran off 21 consecutive points on eight-of-16 shooting.

Buena made 25 of 59 shots in the game, while the Dons made only nine of 47.

Santa Barbara did not get many chances, largely because Buena outrebounded the Dons, 43-14 margin.

Lauren Brooker scored 10 points for the Dons before fouling out with 5:08 to play.

Alemany 65, Hart 50--Kate Beckler scored 22 points and Kelli Kobayashi added 21 as Alemany (3-2) won its third consecutive game to take third place.

Kobayashi scored 17 of her points in the first half.

Alemany built a 17-point advantage and was never threatened.

Melissa Harrison scored 23 points for Hart (3-2) and Jelene Daney had 17.

Ventura 45, Santa Clara 37--Rhiannon Potkey scored 13 points and Alex Gientke added nine for the Cougars (3-1) in the fifth-place game.

Ventura erased an early deficit with an 11-2 run to open the second quarter.

Niecee Madrigal had 11 points and Christine Hanson added nine for Santa Clara (3-3).

Newbury Park 41, Chatsworth 37--Maren Van Orman scored 10 points and Nadine Levsey added eight for the Panthers (1-3) in the seventh-place game.

Chatsworth (1-6) trailed throughout, but closed to within 30-28 in the fourth quarter before Newbury Park scored the next seven points.
