Santa Ana Survives Scare From Fountain Valley

Unranked Fountain Valley just missed upsetting seventh-ranked Santa Ana in nonleague boys’ soccer Friday at Fountain Valley. Santa Ana was able tie the score, 1-1, late in the game.

Jose Sorto’s unassisted goal gave the Saints the tie at the 89-minute mark.

Cliff McKinley scored for Fountain Valley (5-1-2) early in the first half. Eddie Contreras had four saves for Santa Ana (3-1-1).

In other nonleague boys’ soccer:

Esperanza 3, Canyon 1--Aaron Colacion, Kris Welch and David Munoz scored in the second half to beat Canyon (7-1-2). Eighth-ranked Esperanza is 8-1-1.

Estancia 9, Bolsa Grande 0--Fernando Lara scored three goals for Estancia (3-1), which led, 4-0, at halftime. Brad Wayman, who scored one goal in the second half, and Hilario Arriaga combined to make four saves in the shutout.

Santa Margarita 3, Santiago 2--Mike Baldridge broke a 2-2 tie, scoring the game-winning goal in the 75th minute for Santa Margarita (5-4). Matt Froehlich and Brandon Rudat also scored for Santa Margarita. Santiago’s Juan Garcia tied the score, 2-2, on a penalty kick in the 70th minute. San Clemente 2, Aliso Niguel 0--A.J. Jaramaillo, on an assist by Matt Hall, and Chad Dains got the goals. Zach Miederhoff assisted on Dains’ goal. San Clemente is 7-0-1.

In the Brea Olinda boys’ soccer tournament:

Mater Dei, Chino to meet in final--Mater Dei defeated Servite in the semifinals, 3-1, to advance to today’s championship match against Chino at 5:45. Chino advanced by beating Sunny Hills, 2-0. Sunny Hills and Servite will play in the third-place game at 4.

Brea Olinda 3, Rancho Cucamonga 2--Shawn Tellez scored two first-half goals for Brea Olinda (4-1-1). Daniel Flores also scoredfor the Wildcats. Brea Olinda plays Chino Don Lugo, a 3-0 winner over Sonora, at 12:30 p.m. today for fifth place.

Irvine 2, Whittier California 0--Tommy Barro scored on corner kick from David Reid and Scott McLain sealed the victory scoring on a penalty kick, advancing Irvine (7-3-1) to today’s consolation championship against Upland. California is 5-4-1.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Los Amigos 1, Costa Mesa 1--Silvia Reneria of Los Amigos tied the score 10 minutes into second half. Julie Kroening scored Costa Mesa’s goal in the first half.

In the San Clemente Christmas Cup girls’ water polo tournament:

Fountain Valley 7, Capistrano Valley 6--Fountain Valley scored two goals in the final quarter to advance to today’s semifinal against Laguna Hills. Nicole Laurent scored four goals for the Barons (5-3).

In a first-round match, Fountain Valley defeated Mission Hills Alemany, 18-4. The Barons were led by Sharon Vanderpas, who had seven goals, and Lindsay Ortega with six goals.

Mater Dei 11, Dana Hills 9--Senior Jenny Charlesworth scored three of her five goals in the fourth quarter to give Mater Dei the edge. Tiffany Tran had three goals for the Monarchs. Dana Tucker scored five goals to lead Dana Hills.

The Monarchs (7-3) play Trabuco Hills at 9:45 a.m. today in a second-round game.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Villa Park 7, Irvine 5--Villa Park (7-1), the fourth-ranked team in the county, upset second-ranked Irvine (7-1), outscoring the Vaqueros 3-1 in the third quarter. Freshman Kristyn Pulver, who scored five goals in the game, scored once in the period. Carey Titus and Kristin Thompson also scored for the Spartans.

Pulver scored her final goal in the fourth quarter to help the Spartans hold off Irvine. Jaime Pack scored twice for Irvine.

Rosary 12, Walnut 6--Kelly McNely scored five goals and had five assists and four steals to lead fifth-ranked Rosary (6-2). Teammate Julia Wald had four goals.
