Philip-Guide’s Single Lifts Glendale in 11th

Sheldon Philip-Guide hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the 11th inning to break a 4-4 tie and give Glendale College an 8-4 victory over East L.A. in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at East L.A.

East L.A. (3-6) allowed two hits and five walks in the 11th, and 15 hits in the game.

Karl Castro was four for six and Raphael Lomeli and Jesse Mitchell each had three hits for Glendale (7-3), which has won four consecutive games.

In other baseball games:

UC Santa Barbara 2, Pepperdine 1--Dave Uris pitched an eight-hitter and former Chatsworth High standout Bryan LaCour snapped a scoreless tie with a seventh-inning double for the Gauchos (6-4) in a nonconference game at Pepperdine.

Uris (3-0) struck out five and walked three.

LaCour drove in David Willis, who drew a lead-off walk against John Workman (0-2), and scored on a two-out single by Eric Leiser, who had four hits.

Pepperdine (2-6) rallied in the ninth with consecutive singles by David Matranga, Randy Wolf and Steve Zorn. Matranga scored on an infield out.

Azusa Pacific 8, Cal Lutheran 1--Jake Spahr hit two doubles and drove in three runs to lead the Cougars (4-3), ranked 15th in NAIA, in a nonconference game at Azusa Pacific.

Spahr, a junior outfielder who attended Camarillo High and Oxnard College, had three hits.

Cal Lutheran (3-2) scored its run in the eighth.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 97, Bakersfield 77--Gohar Tumanian scored 32 points and LaCresha Clark had 26 points and eight assists for the Cougars (26-4, 9-0) in a Western State Conference Southern Division game at Canyons.

Valley 85, West L.A. 49--Jacque Tennies had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Tanya McLaughlin scored 17 for the Monarchs (22-9, 8-1) in a WSC Southern Division game at Valley.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 85, Claremont-Mudd 69--Brian Capella scored 23 points and the Kingsmen (15-6, 7-3) used a 29-0 run over both halves to blow open a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Cal Lutheran.

Valley 83, West L.A. 73--Oke Ogoke scored 23 points and Pierre Elize added 20 for the Monarchs (20-9, 5-2) in WSC Southern Division game at Valley.

SOFTBALL

Riverside 9, Antelope Valley 6--Kristina Gonzales had three hits, including a run-scoring double, and Kristal Nessa had three hits but the Marauders (0-6) fell to Riverside (4-2) in a nonconference game at Antelope Valley.

Antelope Valley pitcher Corrina Berlinger gave up 10 hits and five walks, including four with the bases loaded.
