Ventura Blows Leads but Not Game
Marc Fallini singled in Brian Riley in the top of the 10th inning to lift Ventura College over Canyons, 12-11, Thursday in a nonconference baseball game at Canyons.
In a game that featured 34 hits, Ventura (10-4) couldn’t hold a 9-1 lead. A ninth-inning home run by Robbie Rehfeld of Canyons (10-4) tied the score, 11-11.
Ventura pitcher Jeremy Pierce (3-0) went the distance and had two hits, including his fourth home run.
In other baseball games:
Moorpark 10, Harbor 9--Andy Husienga singled in Steve Klein, who had tripled, with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Raiders (6-10) in a nonconference game at Moorpark.
Tim Nykoluk had three hits, including a double, and drove in four runs for Moorpark.
Glendale 11, Cerritos 10--The Vaqueros (11-5), after giving up five runs in the top of the ninth, rallied for six runs with two out in the bottom of the inning to pull out a nonconference victory at Glendale.
Brian Eggleston singled in Karl Castro with the winning run. Facing the final out, Raphael Lomeli doubled, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Brett Niles hit a two-run home run, and Castro’s bases-loaded double made it 10-10.
Castro went four for four, including a home run. Shawn Lange (5-0) pitched the final 3 2/3 innings for the Vaqueros.
SOFTBALL
Long Beach City 9, Moorpark 4--Alicia Ramos had three hits and drove in three runs for the Raiders (6-7) in the nonconference game at Moorpark. Long Beach (10-2) had 13 hits.
Antelope Valley 5, Pierce 1--Correna Berlinger (1-6) pitched a two-hitter for the Marauders (3-8-1) in a nonconference game at Antelope Valley. Shannon Martini had two hits, including a home run, for Antelope Valley.
San Diego State 5, Cal State Northridge 0--The Aztecs scored five runs in the fifth inning off Tara Glaister in the San Diego State tournament. The Matadors (5-1) had only two hits.
In an earlier game, Northridge beat Arkansas, 4-3.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Pepperdine d. UC Santa Cruz, 15-3, 15-8, 16-14--George Roumain had 19 kills and Kevin Barnett added 17 for the Waves (8-2) in a nonconference match at Pepperdine.
Loyola Marymount d. Cal State Northridge, 17-15, 15-11, 13-15, 15-9--Jason Hughes had 28 kills for Northridge (6-5, 3-5) but the Lions (4-5, 3-5) prevailed in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Loyola.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Pepperdine 5, Notre Dame 2--Karoline Borgersen defeated Kelly Zalinski, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, at No. 4 singles to put the Waves (5-0) ahead for good in the round of 16 at the USTA/ITA National Indoor championships at Madison, Wis.
Pepperdine meets No. 2 Stanford in the quarterfinals today.
