SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It wasn’t a grade-A performance, but Sonora still had enough to eliminate Ocean View, 54-38, in a Southern Section Division II-A second-round game Tuesday at Sonora High.

Jimmy Landry scored 14 points and Ben Jones scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half to help the Raiders pull away after leading by only four points at halftime.

Sonora (25-3) advanced to play Tustin, which beat Pacifica, 65-63, in the next round Friday. Ocean View ends its season 20-7.

“We had a hard time in the first half because Ocean View was playing great pressure defense,” Sonora Coach Mike Murphy said. “Jimmy kept us in it in the first half because he was able to attack the pressure off the dribble.”

Landry’s two-handed dunk early in the second quarter sparked a 10-3 Sonora run to give the Raiders some breathing room, 20-13, with four minutes remaining in the half.

Landry and Josh Lien, who had 13 points, helped pick up the slack for the team’s leading scorer, Jones, who struggled through a four-for-13 shooting night from the field and managed only two first-half points.

“I think I jinxed Ben before the game,” Murphy said.

Ocean View had problems making anything Tuesday night. The Seahawks shot 33% from the field in the first half (nine of 27). Then it got worse.

Ocean View made only three of 22 from the field in the second half (14%) and eight third-quarter turnovers also contributed to a five-point output in the period. Still, the Seahawks trailed by eight going into the fourth quarter.

Sonora shut down Ocean View’s potent inside game, holding 6-foot-9 junior Kevin Hanson to five points and junior David Hatch to four points.
