Local Heroes Boost Sports Programs

Several legendary local sports heroes head an all-star list of contributors to the city of San Fernando Recreation and Community Service Department’s first-ever sports memorabilia raffle, to raise money for city sports programs.
Former basketball greats Jerry West, now president of the Lakers, and Elgin Baylor, now general manager of the Clippers, and retired Dodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda, a 1997 Hall of Fame selection, are among those to autograph items for the raffle, said Gwen Indermill, San Fernando recreation supervisor.
“Any time we can raise money it really helps the kids. We’re hoping to raise $1,000, and the money will go to pay for awards for our athletic programs,” Indermill said.
Other items to be raffled include basketballs signed by the UCLA and Cal State Northridge men’s basketball teams, footballs signed by members of the UCLA football team, and softballs signed by members of CSUN’s women’s team.
The drawing will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at San Fernando Recreation Park, 208 Park Ave.
Raffle tickets--at $1 apiece--may be purchased at the office at Recreation Park.
