Northridge, Braswell Close in on New Deal

Cal State Northridge basketball Coach Bobby Braswell and Athletic Director Paul Bubb have agreed on the major points of a renegotiated contract, although Braswell remains a candidate for the vacant job at Oregon.

Braswell has a clause in the three-year contract he signed last May that calls for renegotiation after the first season, Bubb said.

“I like the idea of doing a multi-year contract,” Bubb said. “I also like the ability to renegotiate contracts if someone is doing well.”

Braswell said he was happy with the new agreement, but neither he nor Bubb would reveal the terms because the contract has not been formally approved by the university.

Without giving specifics, Braswell and Bubb each indicated the new deal was for more years and a higher salary.

Bill Moos, Oregon’s athletic director, met Tuesday with top administrators at that school to discuss the four candidates: Braswell, Oregon assistant Mark Turgeon, St. Mary’s Coach Ernie Kent and Montana Coach Blaine Taylor. An announcement could come as soon as today or as late as Friday.

Moos has said that Oregon’s new coach would start with a total package of around $150,000 a year. Jerry Green, who resigned last week to take the Tennessee job, was earning $249,000. Braswell earns $72,000.

Holding court: Bubb said Northridge would ask the Big Sky Conference for a delay in the start of a men’s tennis program until the fall of 1998. One of the requirements when Northridge joined the conference in 1995 was that it begin play in 1997.

Big Sky officials will consider the school’s request during their May 17-21 meetings.

On the mend: One week after suffering a heart attack, Antelope Valley High football Coach Brent Newcomb could be released from Antelope Valley Hospitaltoday, said his wife, Pat.

Newcomb underwent an angiogram on Saturday that revealed a blocked artery, his wife said.

Under Newcomb, the Antelopes have won three Southern Section championships.
