The Desert Diamond Classic softball tournament begins...


The Desert Diamond Classic softball tournament begins today with first- and second-round games at Lancaster City Park.

The 16-team field includes 12 from the region and continues next weekend.

First-round games scheduled for 10 a.m. include Crossroads vs. Antelope Valley, L.A. Baptist vs. Rosamond, Highland vs. Santa Paula and Serrano vs. Poly. First-round games beginning at 2 p.m. are La Reina vs. Immaculate Heart, Palmdale vs. Montclair Prep, Notre Dame vs. San Fernando and Oak Park vs. Paraclete.

Second-round games are scheduled for noon and 4 p.m.

Other events in the region today include:

Minor league baseball: At 7:05 p.m., Lancaster at San Bernardino.

College baseball: At 11 a.m., Cal Lutheran at Pomona-Pitzer (doubleheader). At noon, Concordia at The Master’s (doubleheader). At 1 p.m., Pierce at Glendale, Ventura at Oxnard, Bakersfield at Valley, Mission at Canyons, Santa Barbara at Moorpark.


College softball: At noon, Redlands at Cal Lutheran. At 3:30 p.m., Valley at Hancock.

Men’s tennis: At 9 a.m., Cal Lutheran in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team championships at Caltech.

College track and field: At 9 a.m., Cal State Northridge in Mt. SAC Relays.

High school baseball: At noon, South Bay Lutheran vs. Viewpoint at Calabasas High. At 2 p.m., Thacher at Cate, Oak Grove vs. Cornerstone Christian at Freedom Park in Camarillo.

High school basketball: Battle of the Valley All-Star Classic at Valley College--At 6 p.m., girls’ game. At 8 p.m., boys’ game.

High school swimming: At 8 a.m., Crescenta Valley, Hart, Louisville, Newbury Park, Paraclete, Quartz Hill, Royal, Thousand Oaks in Royal Invitational at Rancho Simi Park in Simi Valley.

High school track and field: At 8 a.m., Agoura, Crescenta Valley, Crespi, Fillmore, Hart, La Canada, Newbury Park, Palmdale, Quartz Hill, Rio Mesa, Saugus, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and Ventura in Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonio College. At 9 a.m., L.A. Baptist, Nordhoff, Providence and Village Christian in Russell Cup at Carpinteria High.
