No. 3 Woodbridge Defeats Santa Margarita

Nichole Thompson singled home Lisa Watanabe with one out in the top of the 11th inning to help Woodbridge, ranked third in the county, defeat ninth-ranked Santa Margarita, 2-1, Friday in a Sea View League softball game at Santa Margarita.

Watanabe had four hits and scored both runs for the Warriors (27-2, 8-0), who won their 22nd consecutive game. Pitcher Christy Robitaille (18-2) gave up three hits and struck out nine for Woodbridge.

Santa Margarita (14-9-1, 3-5) was eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.

In another Sea View League game:

Irvine 12, Newport Harbor 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Colleen Young pitched a two-hitter and Edel Leyden had a home run and four RBIs for sixth-ranked Irvine (17-8, 6-2).

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 4, Connelly 0--Amber Arnold pitched a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts and twin sister, Abbey, had two hits and two RBIs for St. Margaret’s (16-4, 8-0).

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 6, Tustin 1--Andrea Droeger had two hits and drove in two runs for the Seahawks (15-8, 8-0).

Westminster 13, Santa Ana 1 (5, mercy)--Kelly Hauxhurst had three hits, two runs and two RBIs for Westminster (16-5-1, 7-1).

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 7, Trabuco Hills 0--Tia Bollinger scattered two hits over five innings and struck out seven to win her 13th for fourth-ranked Mater Dei (23-4, 8-0).

San Clemente 4, Capistrano Valley 0--Stephanie Swenson and Nikki Shannafelt combined on a four-hitter for San Clemente (15-8, 7-1).

In the Golden West League badminton finals:

Ocean View sweeps--Ocean View captured league titles in all five categories at the league championships. Tien Le won titles in girls’ singles and mixed doubles and Trung Nguyen won in boys’ doubles as well as mixed doubles. The top two finishers in each event will advance to the Southern Section individual finals, May 15-17 at Orange County Badminton Club.

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

Western 15, Savanna 6--Western (16-3, 9-1) won its first league championship in 37 years, finishing tied with Brea Olinda (13-10, 9-1), which defeated Valencia, 17-4. It was the third consecutive league championship for Brea.
