Calvary Chapel’s Przygocki Is Too Much for Crossroads

Calvary Chapel senior Keri Przygocki pitched, hit and bunted her way to victory as the Eagles, seeded second in Southern Section Division V softball, defeated defending champion Santa Monica Crossroads, 3-0, in a quarterfinal game Thursday at TeWinkle Park in Costa Mesa.

The visiting Roadrunners (23-6) managed only two singles against Przygocki (13-3), who has given up only three hits in three playoff outings. Meanwhile, Calvary Chapel (23-6) pounded out 10 hits against Crossroads left-hander Erika Koivula, the Division V player of the year in 1996. Two of those came off the bat of Przygocki, who drove in the first two Eagle runs and scored the third.

The Eagles had never advanced past the second round before this season. Now, they’re headed to the semifinals for the first time, with a matchup Tuesday against third-seeded Pomona Catholic (23-5). Pomona Catholic defeated Ontario Christian, 6-0.

Calvary Chapel opened the scoring in the third. Sara Hughes led off with a single to left, and pinch-runner Kara Schones stole second. Two outs later, Przygocki hit a fly ball to right field. Crossroads right fielder Kari Friedman initially broke in on the ball, which ended up over her head for a triple and a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles added two more in the fourth. Christy Ring and Lindsay Stice opened with consecutive infield singles, and both runners advanced on a throwing error. Przygocki followed with a bouncing bunt back to the box, beating the throw to first as Ring scored. Anna Jones singled in Przygocki later in the inning to make the score 3-0.

In Division II:

Woodbridge 2, Corona Centennial 0--Christy Robitaille scattered five hits and struck out eight to post her 13th shutout for Woodbridge (32-2), which will play Cerritos in the semifinals.

Nichole Thompson was three for three with an RBI and a run scored for Woodbridge.

In Division VI:

St. Margaret’s 5, Southern California Christian 0--Amber Arnold hit a three-run triple as part of a four-run sixth inning for St. Margaret’s. The extra runs proved to be unnecessary as sister Abbey Arnold held Southern California Christian (18-2) to one hit and struck out 13.

SCC’s Delci Huntley hit a two-out single in the fourth to break up the no-hitter.

Amber Arnold also singled in the first inning to drive in her sister for a 1-0 lead.

St. Margaret’s (21-4) plays Boron.
