Cowsill Shuts Out Valley South, 7-0

Ryan Cowsill threw a five-hit shutout and Van Nuys East beat Valley South, 7-0, in a District 20 game Thursday at Birmingham High.

Van Nuys East moved to 4-0 as Cowsill (1-0), a right-hander, struck out six, walked two, scattered five hits and stranded seven base runners. Steve Maitland was two for four with three runs batted in, and his two-run double keyed a three-run fifth inning.

In other Legion games:

North Hollywood West 7, Agoura Oaks 4--Pitcher Jose Figueroa (2-0) helped his cause by hitting two home runs, his second and third in a District 20 game at North Hollywood High. He had a three-run homer in the second inning that gave North Hollywood West (3-1) a 5-0 lead. Manny Mosqueda’s grand slam in the top of the fourth made it 5-4.

But Agoura (3-3) was shut out after that. Figueroa, who was three for three, struck out six, walked three and allowed six hits in five innings. Abe Montiel pitched two hitless innings of relief. Ismael Rangsiyawong hit his third home run for North Hollywood.

Valley North 2, San Fernando 0--Tim Weigand and Tom Morefield scored the only runs on an infield throwing error in the third inning of a District 20 game at San Fernando High. Ismael Marin struck out three and allow no walks for the win.

Antelope Valley South 14, Lancaster 2--Brian Scoles (1-0) threw a four-hitter and hit two doubles for Antelope Valley South (1-2) in a District 20 game at Antelope Valley High. Chris Wurster led an 10-hit attack by going three for three. Anthony Barton hit a two-run homer and Dusty Mapson had a grand slam.

Woodland Hills East 10, Burbank South 5--Jeff Spector’s two-run home run triggered a five-run fifth inning that gave Woodland Hills East (3-1) an 8-2 lead in a District 20 game at Taft High. He finished with four RBIs while his brother, Jason, was three for four and drove in two.

Royal 8, Newbury Park 3--Tyrone Kimbrough hit a three-run home run and Brian Lipman hit a two-run home run to pace Royal in a District 16 game at Newbury Park High.

Sun Valley 1, Newhall-Saugus 0--Johnny Manuel’s one-out single for Sun Valley (2-2) scored Jose Canizales in the seventh inning of a District 20 game at Poly High.

Granada Hills East 2, Studio City North 0--Studio City out-hit Granada Hills East, 3-1, but Granada Hills used two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to win the District 20 game at Kennedy High.

Patrick Hernandez scored the game winner when the Studio City shortstop made a bad throw to first base on Marcus Alvarado’s grounder.
