Racius Set for Hawaii, Lane for Purdue

Quarterback Tom Racius and wide receiver Randall Lane of Valley College are expected to sign letters of intent today with Division I colleges, Valley Coach Gary Barlow said.

Racius, who last season led the Western State Conference in passing yards, will attend Hawaii.

Lane, who ranked fourth in the WSC in receptions, will attend Purdue. Both are sophomores.

BASKETBALL

Double duty: The Kennedy High boys’ basketball team will be playing a doubleheader today, with a nonconference game against Narbonne at 2:30 and a 5 p.m. tournament game against North Hollywood at Bell-Jeff High.

Narbonne administrators agreed to flip the starting time of the varsity and junior varsity games.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Rerun: Dusty Herman and Elaine Canchola of Nordhoff High have been selected as the Ventura County cross-country runners of the year for the second consecutive season.

Herman won his second consecutive Ventura County title in October and capped a superb senior season by placing 18th in the national championships. Canchola, a senior, won her first 12 races of the season before finishing ninth in the West regional.

Ken Reeves of Nordhoff was named boys’ coach of the year, with Reeves and Debra Sharp of Santa Clara sharing the girls’ award.

SOFTBALL

Hit parade: The 16-and-under Southern California Stealth outscored opponents, 60-1, in seven games to win the Toys for Tots tournament in Riverside last weekend.

Amanda Fortune of Hart High pitched three shutouts. Kristy Nicklaus of El Camino Real batted .524 and Amanda Oleson of Agoura hit .417.

SOCCER

Stepping up: Greg Cohen has been named girls’ coach at Canyon High, replacing Chris Ward, who was in his first season.

Cohen, 26, a Canyon boys’ assistant, was told by school officials that Ward resigned.

BOXING

First blood: Heavyweight Lance Whitaker (12-0) of Granada Hills knocked out Eddie Gonzales of Houston in the first round Saturday at Concord Plaza Expo Center in Northlake, Ill.
