Three County Players in Badminton Finals

Three Orange County badminton players won semifinal matches Wednesday, reaching today’s final round of the Junior National Badminton Championships at the Orange County Badminton Club in Orange.

May Mangkalakiri of Garden Grove reached the under-14 girls’ singles final and, along with Nicole Ling, the under-14 girls’ doubles final. Nick Mangkalakiri of Garden Grove, with teammate Ted Shear reached the under-12 boys’ doubles final. Anaheim Hills’ Panita Phongasavithas will play in the under-12 girls’ doubles final with teammate K. Yamazaki.

Shawn Mulligan has been hired as the girls’ basketball coach at Dana Hills High.

Mulligan, who played at San Clemente High, coached the sophomore boys’ team at Capistrano Valley last season, leading the Cougars to a 21-1 record. He is the son of former UC Irvine Coach Bill Mulligan and the husband of San Clemente girls’ Coach Mary Mulligan. San Clemente and Dana Hills both play in the South Coast League.

Dana Hills was 2-21 last season.

Anne Jacobs, the walk-on girls’ tennis coach at Trabuco Hills High, has resigned after one season for personal reasons, Athletic Director Gary Sabella said Wednesday.
