Russell, 71, of Hollywood, who is credited with helping save baseball at Los Angeles City College (twice) and Pasadena City College, has joined the crusade to save Northridge’s four canceled men’s programs.

Russell has lined up several speakers on Northridge’s behalf for the Cal State University board of trustees meeting in Long Beach on July 16.

Speakers include agent Dennis Gilbert, Pepperdine volleyball Coach Marv Dunphy, Cal State L.A. baseball Coach John Herbold, Loyola Marymount baseball Coach Frank Cruz and Kennedy baseball Coach Manny Alvarado.

Sparky Anderson, former manager of the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers, will write a letter to the board, Russell said.

Russell, a former TV lighting technician, helped get baseball reinstated at L.A. City in 1986 and ‘95, and at Pasadena City in ’96.

“Here we are again in the same scenario,” Russell said. “This is breaking the hearts of young kids whose whole life is baseball.”

Russell urges Northridge supporters to write to Martha Fallgatter, trustee chairperson, at 400 Golden Shores, Suite 134, Long Beach 90802.
