Arreola Takes Run at Another 5K Title
Darcy Arreola of Valencia, the 1991 NCAA champion in the women’s 1,500 meters for Cal State Northridge, is expected to compete in the 15th Independence Day Classic 5K Run at 9 a.m. today in Newhall.
Arreola won three consecutive women’s titles from 1989-91, but she hasn’t run in the race since her last victory.
She set a course record of 16:35 in 1991, but she doesn’t expect to approach that time today after training sporadically for several months because of an injury to her left knee.
The course will differ from last year in that the race will finish on the Hart High track instead of at nearby Newhall Memorial Park, where it starts.
In addition to the 5K run, a 1K kid’s run will be held at 8:30 a.m. and a 5K walk will start at 8:45.
