Pacifica’s Amanda Freed has been named first-team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Assn.

Freed, a pitcher, went 20-0 with a 0.23 earned-run average and a Southern Section-tying five perfect games. She was The Times Orange County player of the year.

Freed’s teammate, third baseman Toni Mascarenas was a second-team selection. She batted .400 with 22 runs batted in and scored 24 runs. Pacifica finished the year ranked No. 1 nationally by the association.

Former Esperanza and University wrestling coach Steve Stewart will become coach at Villa Park High, said Frank Becker, Villa Park’s boys’ athletic director.

Stewart, who coached at Indio last season, replaced Michael Salotti, who resigned in February. Stewart will teach science and also coach freshman football.

Becker also announced that Bryan Shoup, who was an assistant boys’ soccer coach at Esperanza last year, will take over as head coach for the Villa Park boys’ team. Shoup, who will be student teaching at Villa Park, replaces Fidel Alatorre, who resigned.

The fifth Summer Hoops Tournament for girls’ basketball players begins with pool-play competition today at Estancia High, Irvine Valley College and Concordia University. Play continues Saturday with finals set for Sunday. Daily admission is $3, $2 for students; seniors and children under 12 free.

The Orange County Diggers (0-1) host the San Diego Spikers (1-0) at noon Sunday at Newport Beach in a National Grass Volleyball League game. The women’s professional four-person league continues weekend play through its championship final, Aug. 23 at UC San Diego.
