Newport Harbor Clinches League Title

Jennifer Carey had 52 assists as Newport Harbor defeated Corona del Mar, 15-7, 15-13, 15-7, to clinch the Sea View League title Tuesday at Corona del Mar. Carey had seven kills and three blocks for the fourth-ranked Sailors, who clinched their fifth consecutive girls’ volleyball title.
April Ross was Newport Harbor’s kill leader with 20. Teammate Kathy Lavold had 10 kills for the Sailors (16-2, 9-0).
Corona del Mar is 6-3 in league.
In the Empire League:
No. 8 Cypress 3, Loara 0--Dusty Creager had 10 kills and two aces as Cypress clinched the Empire League title with a victory over Loara, 15-5, 15-3, 15-10. The title is the third consecutive championship for the Centurions (11-2, 9-0).
Jessica Miles had 12 kills for Loara (5-10, 1-8).
In the Sunset League:
No. 2 Fountain Valley 3, Huntington Beach 0--Setter Melissa Plass had 26 assists, 10 digs, seven kills, and four aces for Fountain Valley (13-2, 8-1), which won, 15-7, 15-5, 15-1. The Barons are tied for first with Marina.
No. 5 Marina 3, Esperanza 0--Katie Keating, Chanda McLeod and Lindsay Phillips each had 14 kills in a victory for Marina (12-2, 8-1).
In the Empire League boys’ cross-country finals:
Katella wins title--Katella, ranked second, had four runners place in the top 10. Jose Herrera of Loara won the 3.05-mile race in 15 minutes 35 seconds, followed by Katella’s Danny Mejia (15:43) and Juan Casas (16:04) on the Irvine Regional Park course.
In the Empire League girls’ cross-country finals:
Katella dominates--Katella’s Jillian Santibanez won the 3.05-mile race in 19:07, followed by teammates Jonalyn Smith (19:52), Alicia Casas (21:15), and Cristal Hernandez (20:23) on the Irvine Regional Park Course.
In Tournament of Champions field hockey:
Newport Harbor 1, Marina 0--Kassy Thompson scored on an assist from Kyle McNichols with 1:37 left in the first half to lift Newport Harbor (7-3-4) in the first-round game. Erin Kennedy had nine saves to earn the shutout for the Sailors.
In Freeway League girls’ tennis:
No. 9 Troy 18, La Habra 0--The doubles team of Sarah Riley and Lori Judd won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, to remain undefeated in league for Troy (16-1, 10-0), which repeats as league champion for the first time since 1974 and 1975.
