Calabasas Prevails on Rosenberg Field Goal

Calabasas High rode to victory Saturday on the right leg of kicker David Rosenberg, whose 32-yard field goal with 56 seconds to play lifted the Coyotes over Harvard-Westlake, 31-28, in a nonleague football game at Harvard-Westlake.

As for the Wolverines, they spent the 2 1/2 hours preceding Rosenberg’s winning kick by repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot. Harvard-Westlake (2-2) had three touchdowns called back on penalties and had three passes intercepted.

With 4:20 to play, the Wolverines had an extra-point attempt blocked that would have given them a 29-28 lead.

Calabasas (4-0) then drove 67 yards in seven plays to set up the field goal.

Moments after his heroics, Rosenberg acknowledged he had been nervous.

“I was hoping we’d score a touchdown so I wouldn’t have to go through the pressure,” the senior said, smiling.

It was the second game-winning kick of Rosenberg’s career. His 41-yard field goal with no time remaining gave Calabasas a first-round playoff victory over Ontario Christian last season.

Saturday, Harvard-Westlake built a 16-7 halftime lead. The Wolverines scored on an 18-yard halfback option pass from Justin Logan to Alex Holmes, a 32-yard field goal by Matt Thayer and a 10-yard run by Logan.

Harvard-Westlake had consecutive touchdown plays nullified by penalties on its second possession.

Calabasas scored with three minutes to play in the half on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Dallas Enoch to Robby Coppola.

Five minutes into the third quarter, Coppola scored on a three-yard run and Calabasas pulled within 16-14.

Moments later, Bilal Hasan intercepted a John Terzian pass, setting up a 65-yard touchdown pass from Enoch to Jeff Wilk on the next play. A Rosenberg kick gave Calabasas a 21-16 lead.

The Wolverines answered 1 1/2 minutes later with a three-yard touchdown run by Logan, followed on the Coyotes’ next possession by a 25-yard option pass from Coppola to Hasan for a touchdown and a 28-22 Calabasas lead at the end of three quarters.

Harvard-Westlake’s final score, a three-yard run by Robert Van Norden, capped a 51-yard, six-play drive and tied the score at 28-28. Thayer’s extra-point attempt was blocked by Wilk.

Logan rushed 28 times for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Coppola was held to 30 yards and a touchdown in 15 carries and caught three passes for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Enoch completed 12 of 19 passes for 279 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and Terzian completed three of 13 for 31 yards and three interceptions.
