Caffrey Sets County Record With 422 Yards

Paul Caffrey broke one county record and tied another as Heritage Christian defeated Sherman Oaks Buckley, 70-21, in a Victory League game Saturday at Buckley.

Caffrey rushed for 422 yards in 20 carries, a county record. Dana Hills’ Jim Gleed set the previous mark of 418 yards against Laguna Hills in 1979.

Caffrey also scored seven touchdowns, tying Western running back Trevell Jackson’s performance this season against Santa Ana Valley.

Three of his touchdowns were on runs of 52 yards or more, including his last one, a 60-yarder in the fourth quarter.

Heritage Christian (2-3, 1-1) finished with 616 rushing yards. Jacob Somerville had 122 yards in 13 carries and two touchdowns.

In a Christian League game:

Covina Western Christian 48, Southern California Christian 0--The Lancers spoiled homecoming for SCC in the opening Christian League game for both teams.

The Flames (1-5, 0-1) were outmanned from the start.

After a fumble by SCC quarterback Mike Shurance at the Flames’ 11, the Lancers struck quickly. Running back Brian Richards ran in from four yards for a 6-0 lead.

On their next possession, the Lancers (4-2, 1-0) drove 63 yards, taking a 14-0 lead on a 13-yard pass to tight end Brent Wellington from quarterback Aaron Marvin.

The Lancers increased their lead to 21-0 on a 26-yard run by Richards, who rushed seven times for 74 yards and two touchdowns.

On the Flames’ ensuing drive, a Shurance pass was intercepted by Lancers’ defensive back Sean Stapleton, who ran it in for the touchdown and a 28-0 lead.

After another Western Christian touchdown made it 34-0, the Flames drove to the Lancers’ 38. On fourth and eight at Western Christian’s 38--SCC’s deepest penetration--the Flames went for it, and Shurance threw his second interception of the game, and it too, was returned for a touchdown. Lancers’ defensive back Jeff Gluch ran it back 68 yards, giving Western a 41-0 lead.

The lone bright spot for SCC was running back James Brantley, who rushed for 66 yards in 17 carries.
