1996 in Review

Mater Dei’s 17-10 victory over Los Angeles Loyola in the Southern Section Division I championship game gave the Monarchs their second section title in three seasons. Mater Dei coasted into the final, outscoring its first three playoff opponents, 124-48.

The Monarchs did it with balance throughout the season. The offense featured two 1,000-yard rushers, Mike McNair and James Farley, and quarterback Nick Stremick passed for 2,376 yards and 27 touchdowns. The defense gave up fewer than nine points per game during the regular season.

Mater Dei also featured the county’s top player, Rod Perry. He caught 78 passes for 1,493 yards, scored 19 touchdowns and intercepted five passes.

Capistrano Valley played Mater Dei tough and Malaefou MacKenzie, who rushed for 1,320 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, scored on an 80-yard run to make it close. But Mater Dei prevailed in the regular-season finale and league-title game, 20-15.
