Plass Sparks Fountain Valley Victory

Melissa Plass had 59 assists and her ace in the fourth game closed out Fountain Valley’s 15-4, 7-15, 15-10, 17-15 victory over Santa Margarita in a nonleague girls’ volleyball match Tuesday at Fountain Valley High.

Natalie Snowden had 21 kills for Fountain Valley (1-1), ranked fourth in The Times’ preseason poll. Santa Margarita (0-1) is ranked third.

In other nonleague matches:

Capistrano Valley 3, Irvine 2--Leeann McLaughlin had 15 kills for Capistrano Valley (2-0), which won, 17-15, 16-14, 13-15, 13-15, 15-12. Julianna Bayley had 21 kills for Irvine (0-1).

Huntington Beach 3, Newport Harbor 2--Lori Daedelow had 27 kills and Denee Ezerins had 21 for Huntington Beach (2-0), which outlasted Newport Harbor, 15-11, 14-16, 14-16, 15-7, 15-11.

April Ross had 24 kills and 16 digs for Newport Harbor (1-1), which rallied from 14-11 deficits to win Games 2 and 3.

Ocean View 3, Corona del Mar 2--Tracy Lindquist had 71 assists for Ocean View (1-0), which won, 11-15, 15-5, 5-15, 15-2, 17-15. Jordana Havrilik had a match-high 25 kills for the Sea Kings.

In Sunset League field hockey:

Marina 1, Newport Harbor 0--Emily Frederick scored in the first minute for Marina.

In nonleague water polo:

Laguna Beach 15, La Habra 10--Spencer Dornin scored seven goals for Laguna Beach (2-0). Nathan Allard had five goals for La Habra (1-1).

Villa Park 9, Santa Margarita 8--Nick Pacelli’s goal with 2:31 remaining gave Villa Park a 9-7 lead. The score was tied at six to start the fourth quarter, then Pacelli and Kyle Baumgarner each scored for Villa Park (1-0). Tyler Wilson scored four goals for Santa Margarita (0-1).

Garden Grove 35, Downey Warren 9--Jeff Colton scored 11 goals and Tom Lane added nine for Garden Grove (1-0).
