Gabriel Roman’s Touchdown Passes Lift Kennedy
ANAHEIM — Kennedy quarterback Gabriel Roman threw for three first-half touchdowns to lead the Fighting Irish to a 31-13 victory over Montebello Friday night at Western High.
Kennedy broke out of a two-week funk on offense, scoring 28 first-half points with Roman’s three touchdowns and another on a 41-yard touchdown run by Joe Magallanes in the first half.
Kennedy (2-1) scored on its first possession, driving 67 yards in seven plays and scoring on a fourth-and-four play on a 24-yard pass from Roman to running back Jack Tucker.
After the Fighting Irish’s Dan Papanic recovered a fumbled punt at the Montebello 16, Roman hooked up with receiver Geoff Burch on a 15-yard scoring pass for a 14-0 lead.
The Oilers (1-2) got on the scoreboard on a 20-yard pass play from quarterback Jacob Del-Gadillo to wide receiver Victor Pelayo to cut the lead to 14-7 with 8:11 remaining in the first half.
On Kennedy’s next drive, Magallanes broke loose on a 41-yard touchdown run up the middle. Less then two minutes later, Roman connected with Ryan Roberson for his third touchdown pass of the half, a 19-yard scoring toss to Ryan Roberson.
Kennedy concluded its scoring on a 25-yard field goal by Aaron Lewis in the third quarter.
Kennedy’s defense limited Del-Gadillo to 52 yards passing on six of 17 attempts.
