Laguna Hills’ Furst Runs County’s Best Time of Season in 800

Ashley Furst of Laguna Hills surpassed the county’s best time this season in the 800 meters by nearly five seconds as the Hawks (2-0) defeated University, 72-62, in a Pacific Coast League girls’ track and field meet Thursday at University.

Furst, a junior, won the race in 2 minutes 17.5 seconds, breaking the mark of 2:21.93 by Kristen Green of Huntington Beach..

In South Coast League boys’ track and field:

No. 5 Dana Hills 88, Capistrano Valley 48--James Brown won the 110 hurdles (14.74) for Dana Hills (4-0, 2-0). Devin Lindahl took the 800 (2:04.68) and the 1,600 (4:41.06) also for the Dolphins. Capistrano Valley is 3-1, 1-1.

In Sunset League boys’ track and field:

No. 8 Edison 73, No. 3 Esperanza 63--Bobby Sparks won the pole vault (14-6) and Travis Pendleton won the discus (159-7) for Esperanza (1-1 in league). Justin Birrel took first in the shot put (60-3) for Esperanza.

In Orange League girls’ track and field:

No. 4 Brea Olinda 111, Anaheim 25--Marla McReynolds finished first in the long jump (16-5 1/4), triple jump (32-4 1/2) and finished second in the 100 hurdles (17.8) for Brea Olinda (4-3, 2-0), which won its 52nd consecutive league meet.

In Sea View League girls’ track and field:

No. 2 Woodbridge 78 1/3, El Toro 48 1/3--Woodbridge’s Meryl Stone won the 100 with a time of 12.4, the second fastest time in the county this season. Stone also won the 200 with a time of 25.5, the fastest time in the county.

No. 3 Santa Margarita 75, No. 8 Newport Harbor 64--Amanda Shanklin won four events for Santa Margarita (4-0, 2-0), including the triple jump (36-5 1/4) and the long jump (17-4 3/4).

In the South Coast League:

No. 1 Mission Viejo 109 1/2, Mater Dei 26 1/2--Sarah Higham established a season-best mark of 11-6 in the pole vault for Mission Viejo (3-0, 2-0). Freshman Dana Bethel won the 100 hurdles (15.4), 300 hurdles (48.7) and long jump (16-9 1/4) for the Diablos.

In Century League baseball:

Foothill 7, Canyon 5--Robby Koster went three for three with a run and RBI for visiting Foothill (7-2, 3-0). Canyon scores came from Jason Royce, who hit a two-run home run in the third inning, and Tommy Duarte, who had a three-run homer in the sixth.

In Empire League baseball:

Cypress 6, Loara 4--Jason Pushkor pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks in a victory for host Cypress (8-4, 3-2). Jayson Rodriguez had two hits and three RBIs for the Centurions.

Loara fell to 6-6, 3-2 in league.

In Golden West League baseball:

Westminster 10, Saddleback 8--Ricky Guerrero had two hits and four RBIs in a victory for visiting Westminster (9-2, 3-1). Teammate Chris Carey had two hits and two RBIs. Saddleback is 2-6, 0-4.

In Orange League baseball:

Western 3, Magnolia 0--Brandon Herbert improved his ERA to 0.98 in 28 2/3 innings with a five-hit shutout for Western (7-3-1, 3-0-1). He also had two hits including a home run.

In South Coast League baseball:

No. 3 Mater Dei 9, Trabuco Hills 0--Junior left-hander Nick Lovato threw a one-hitter, giving up only a second-inning double on a misplayed fly ball. He struck out seven and walked one. Brett Kay had a home run and three RBIs for Mater Dei (9-1, 4-0).

In Sunset League baseball:

Edison 8, Fountain Valley 2--Andrew Rodriguez threw his third complete game in four outings, striking out eight and walking four, to improve to 4-0. Scott Maas was two for three with an RBI and two runs scored for the Chargers (6-4, 2-3). Fountain Valley is 6-5, 1-3.

In Sea View League golf:

Irvine 193, Newport Harbor 203--Justin Neiman and Jon Varracina each shot a one-over par 37 in a victory for visiting Irvine at Big Canyon C.C. Michael Labery had a 38 for the Vaqueros (6-3, 1-3).

In Sunset League girls’ swimming:

No. 4 Fountain Valley 121, No. 7 Marina 65--Jennifer McCoy finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:57.76) and the 500 freestyle (5:07.53), and Danielle Laurent won the 200 individual medley (2:16.73) and 100 backstroke (1:03.53) for Fountain Valley (4-1, 2-0).
