Thousand Oaks Reaches Semifinals

Thousand Oaks High won two games in the Fountain Valley softball tournament on Saturday, defeating University of San Diego, 2-0, in a first-round game before handing El Modena a 2-1 setback in a quarterfinal game.

Shauna Lane singled home Kristin Combe with two out in the sixth inning to tie the score, 1-1, against El Modena. Lane stole second and was singled home by Shelly Teverbaugh.

The Lancers (7-1-1) got their runs in the sixth against University when Combe, who had three hits, singled home Vanessa Hanson and Colleen Spencer.

Kim Martin (3-0) pitched a six-hitter.

In other softball games:

Scripps Ranch 2, Chaminade 1--Alicia Ortman scored from second base on Chrissy Dilco’s single with two out in the 10th inning of a Fountain Valley tournament game.

Chaminade (1-5-1) had taken a 1-0 lead in the ninth inning when Maureen LeCoq scored from third on a wild pitch.

Scripps Ranch tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Amy Velaquez scored from third on a two-out single by Tiffany Chambers.

Chambers’ hit was the first allowed by LeCoq (1-5-1), who struck out 10 and walked one.

Santa Monica 6, Flintridge Sacred Heart 3--Lacey Smale’s triple for the Rebels (5-3) was the only extra-base hit in an El Segundo tournament loss.

BASEBALL

Harvard-Westlake 6, Alhambra 5--Jay Levine had three hits, including a double, and scored two runs for the Wolverines in a Babe Herman tournament victory at Stengel Field.

Matt Thayer had two hits and extended his hitting streak to 10 games for Harvard-Westlake (5-6).

Chad Garson (2-0) allowed two hits and one earned run over four innings.

Valencia 11, Village Christian 1--Jarred Myren (4-0) allowed two hits and no earned runs over five innings to help the Vikings win a Babe Herman tournament game.

Chris Northway had three hits, including a double, and scored three runs, and Ryan Coe had two hits and two runs batted in for Valencia (10-3).

Montclair Prep 9, Brentwood 8--Hiro Tazaki had three hits and Jeff Skobin added two hits to spark the Mounties to victory at Brentwood (4-3).

Micah Cohen had two hits for Montclair Prep (7-3), which withstood a five-run rally in the sixth inning.

University 9, Monroe 1--Vince Vargas singled in Victor Hall with the Vikings’ run in a Kennedy tournament pool-play game at Monroe.

Damien Ritter had two hits for Monroe (5-7-1).

Kennedy 11, Poly 1--Jack Cassel had three hits, including a three-run home run, and five RBIs for the Cougars (9-3) in a Kennedy tournament pool-play game stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Cassel had 12 RBIs in his past three games.

Tim Arroyo limited Poly to two hits.

Salvador Trujillo had two doubles for the Parrots (7-2-1).

San Fernando 6, Grant 5--Fernando Hernandez doubled home Francisco Enriquez with the winning run in the seventh inning in a Kennedy tournament pool-play game at San Fernando.

Hernandez had three hits, and Ricardo Alvarez and Hector Salazar each had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers (4-6).

Cole James and Felipe Tetelboin each had a single and a triple for Grant.

Birmingham 12, Eagle Rock 0--Junior Nick Galloway pitched a one-hitter for his first varsity victory, striking out two and walking two in a Birmingham tournament round-robin game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Rick Hooper, Joey Rubin and Brendon Bartholomew each drove in two runs for Birmingham (6-7).

Birmingham 4, Palisades 3--Bartholomew’s sixth-inning single drove in Billy McGrath with the winning run in a Birmingham tournament round-robin game.

It was Bartholomew’s second run-scoring single of the game.

Chatsworth 11, Culver City 1--Mike Kunes drove in four runs with two hits, including a two-run double for the Chancellors (11-1) in a Kennedy tournament round-robin game that was called after five innings.

Matt Cassel had two hits and scored twice for the Chancellors, and Danny Eisenberg had two hits and one RBI.

Scott Sellz (4-0) pitched a four-hitter, striking out four.
