Higham Nears County Pole Vault Mark

Mission Viejo’s Sarah Higham cleared 11 feet 11 inches in the pole vault during the Diablos’ 108-25 victory over San Clemente in a South Coast League girls’ track and field meet Thursday at Mission Viejo.

Higham, who cleared 11-9 last season, is nearing the county’s all-time prep mark of 12- 3/4, which was set by Foothill’s Erica Hornig during a junior national meet in the summer of 1996.

In another South Coast League girls’ meet:

No. 8 Capistrano Valley 79, Trabuco Hills 55--Capistrano Valley’s Lindsay Greco (12.4) and Trabuco Hills’ Kristin Keenan (12.5) took the top two spots in the 100.

In the Sea View League:

No. 6 Woodbridge 73, Corona del Mar 63--Meryl Stone finished first in the 100 (12.5) and 200 (26.0) for Woodbridge. Corona del Mar’s Liz Morse ran 58.5 in the 400, the fastest time in the county this season.

No. 2 Santa Margarita 83, Irvine 48--Brooke Fitzgerald, Catherine Nolan and Christy Von der Ahe each broke school records for Santa Margarita (5-0, 3-0). Fitzgerald took first in the shotput (37-10), Nolan won the discus (107-4 1/2) and Von der Ahe took second in the pole vault (9-6).

In the Sunset League:

Marina 95, Los Alamitos 41--Jenny Wootton won the 300 hurdles (49.0), long jump (16-3) and triple jump (34-8), and Katie Rorem had her best mark of the season in the pole vault (11-6) for Marina (7-1, 2-1).

In Pacific Coast League boys’ track and field:

Aliso Niguel 92, Estancia 39--Aliso Niguel senior Alain Nicasio set a personal best in the long jump (22-1) and won the triple jump (43-4) and 300 hurdles (44.0).

In the Sea View League:

No. 7 Santa Margarita 78, Irvine 58--Matt Brooks finished first in the 100 (11.2), 200 (22.69) and long jump (20-6 3/4) for Santa Margarita (6-0, 3-0). Al Williams won the 110 hurdles (14.89), 300 hurdles (39.37) and high jump (5-8) for Irvine (1-2 in league).

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 119 1/2, San Clemente 16 1/2--Mission Viejo’s Mike Chavis won the 200 with a time of 21.9, which ties the best mark in the county this season. Chavis also won the 400 with a time of 51.5.

In the Sunset League:

Marina 88, Los Alamitos 48--Marina’s Ben Forbes won the 110 hurdles (14.9), 300 hurdles (41.1) and the triple jump (42-5).
