Birmingham’s Lambert Transferring to Westlake

Julian Lambert, a sophomore sprinter who was the anchor on Birmingham High’s 400-meter relay team, has checked out of school and intends to transfer to Westlake, Brave track Coach Scott King said Wednesday.

Lambert, also a promising running back in football, would be the second City Section athlete in the past month to transfer to Westlake. Michael Brignac, a Reseda High football/basketball player, is already attending classes at Westlake after obtaining an interdistrict transfer to the Conejo Valley District.

Lambert and Brignac both played youth football with Westlake quarterback Zac Wasserman.

Birmingham football Coach Dave Lertzman said he intends to file a complaint with the City Section and Southern Section office alleging undue influence.

Lambert’s stepfather, Scott Byers, an assistant football coach at Valley College, said he intends to move his family into the Westlake district. Byers said no one influenced the decision to switch schools.

BASKETBALL

Rhode Island bound: Forward Leon Brisport of the Valley College men’s team has signed a letter of intent with Rhode Island.

Brisport, a 6-foot-9 sophomore from Brooklyn, was an all-Western State Conference selection while leading the Monarchs in scoring (17.8 points a game) and rebounding (8.1).

Mahan resigns: Tom Mahan, the Antelope Valley High boys’ coach the past four seasons, has resigned to spend more time with his family. Mahan guided the Antelopes to a 72-33 record and two Golden League titles. He was previously the coach at Highland for two seasons and an assistant at Quartz Hill.

SOFTBALL

Signing: Highland High’s Michelle Wintermute signed a letter of intent with Cal State Northridge on Tuesday.

TRACK AND FIELD

Throwback: Doug Reynolds, the No. 6-ranked discus thrower in the nation in 1997, has been added to the field for the Antelope Valley College Throws Festival today.

Reynolds, who has a personal best of 207 feet in the discus, will be an underdog to former UCLA standout John Godina, who has a best of 221-1 and finished fifth in the 1997 World Championships in Athens.

Today’s meet will start with the women’s seeded discus at 12:30 p.m.

BOXING

Fights canceled: The monthly Ventura County boxing program scheduled for tonight at The Derby Club at Seaside Park has been canceled because of a lack of fighters.

Promoter Robert Valdez said the site’s next fight card is unscheduled.

SOCCER

Coach resigns: Zoran Lomic, coach of the Oak Park High boys’ team the past four years, has resigned.

Lomic guided the Eagles to Tri-Valley League titles in 1995 and 1996. Oak Park earned a 1998 Southern Section playoff berth but was removed from the postseason by school officials after a string of behavioral problems that culminated when an Eagle player spattered a referee with blood.

BASEBALL

Commitment: Aaron Rofer, a catcher at Kennedy, has accepted an academic scholarship to Chapman College.

VOLLEYBALL

Heading north: Crespi High outside hitter James Spratt, who was All-Mission League as a junior last season, has committed to UC Santa Barbara.
